I have another question.....

completely undrelated but has anyone ever been to a Therapist or "shrink"? I went to see Dr. Inz, our family doctor, the other other day. I have been having some issues with the passing of my MIL and I needed some help. I cry when I am alone by myself for long periods and have trouble falling asleep at night b/c I think about everything I saw and expierence in the dieing process. It is really rough...but to make a long story short...I have an appointment with a "shrink" on Monday night and I really didn't know what was instore for me......another experiences would be helpful! Huh?

Re: I have another question.....

  • I have! I have cronic depression that affects my moods. Also my mom is bipolar. So they will probably give you a anti depressant to help you get through this. There is no shame of going on something, to get you through. I think it should be manditory, since we all are not prepared enough for losses like that.

  • I went for a while in college. It was just a lot of questions that let me sort out how I felt about things and giving me coping strategies. I am not opposed to going if necessary, and Steve and I almost went pre-wedding.
  • Beth, you're not alone.  It is good you've recognized that you need help.  Reaching out to an expert is the first step in sorting through your emotions.

I've done both individual and group counseling.  I found that the sessions can be frustrating, sometimes exhausting, but the time in between the sessions will allow you to reflect on what was said and make some shifts in your thought patterns.  If you really work on implementing the recommendations of your doctor, you can improve your quality of life.

I've also taken medication for anxiety in two periods of my life (1) after 9/11 and (2) when I was preparing for a big exam in school.  Medication can help if you are "on the brink."  Basically it can sedate you enough to get you through each day, but it is definitely not a long-term solution.  Many medications have horrible side-effects that can make the overall experience of being medicated more of a hinderance rather than a help.  In the end, I had to learn to manage my anxiety without medication and/or I had to let some time pass so that the traumatic event was a distant-ish memory.

Keep us informed of your progress.  I wish you the best of luck!
