What is Charleston like...jobs, homeprices, rental homes, nightlife, historicness?

Re: What is Charleston like...jobs, homeprices, rental homes, nightlife, historicness?
Charleston is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen. We vacationed there every summer for about 10 years before we relocated there in 2005. We loved it there - great beaches, fantastic restaurants, tons if history. We had to move back north about 6 months ago for my husband's job, and we really miss it. Homes are affordable, taxes are low, and the weather is great. I am a teacher and taught in both Charleston and Berkeley Counties. I never had trouble getting a job, and when I didn't like the one I had, I didn't have trouble switching to another school. You do have to be prepared for some rough schools, depending on the area in which you choose to teach. I really enjoyed teaching in Berkeley. From what I heard, Dorchester District 2 has some great schools too. Charleston is within driving distance to so many other great places as well. It is easy to take day or weekend trips to Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, and Savannah. We will be spending 2 weeks this summer down there, and probably be back every summer after. We hope to eventually buy a vacation home and retire there as well. I have some pics in my bio. Also, if you're serious about the move and need a realtor, Sue Davis helped us buy and sell our house and was fabulous. Her website is www.suedavishomes.com I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have, if I can. Good luck!
I have heard there is a huge difference between the "haves" and "have nots" in Charleston (from friends who have lived there.) They said most of the public schools are really bad, and everyone who is a "have" sends their kids to private schools.
SO you may want to consider looking at private schools as well.
Charleston's a wonderful town. It truly depends on the area you choose to live in as to whether public or private school is an option. I grew up on Kiawah Island, and have friends that still live there and in Charleston. Once you have narrowed your home search down to a few areas, I'd contact the school district for their education ratings-teacher ratings and/or state ratings. That's the best/most substantial way-aside from asking fellow nesties of course-to find the specifics about any city's area schools.
I know this was a bit rambling, but I hope it helps a bit.
