XP: Restaurant recommendations plz

Hi S.D. ladies!  I'm a NJ Knottie and new NJ Nestie, and I'm hoping to get your help.  I'm heading to S.D. for a few days in March w/ MH and I wanted to get some good restaurant recommendations from the locals!  I'll probably be staying in the downtown area/Gaslamp District, but I'm not opposed to traveling a bit out of the area to go to a good restaurant.  I love Mexican food, and would love to find a really good west coast authentic Mexican joint.  I also love seafood, but any cuisine would be great.

TIA ladies :)

  • Breakfast- Hash House A Go Go.  I love their biscuits and Banana & Brown Sugar Pancake.

Mexican Food- Cuatro Milpas.  This is in the barrio and it is NO FRILLS!  It is authentic mexican food and there is always a line to order.  They close around 2pm so you can only do breakfast and lunch there.  You order at the counter and grab a tray.  Seating is community dining style so you will probably be sharing your table with others.  Its off of I-5 South on Cesar Chavez Parkway right under the Coronado Bridge. Cash only!

  • For a nice dinner (or lunch, or just drinks and desserts), I highly recommend The Prado.  It's in Balboa Park, so you're in the middle of all these great museums and scenery, has a gorgeous outdoor patio, and delicious mojitos and cream cheese flan!

I second both of those....and a word of warning...I am sort of a snootie foodie so when someone took me to Cuatro Milpas the first time, I almost did not eat there. I swore I was going to die from food poisioning...but when we got inside there were everything from Day Labors and Construction Workers to people in suits (me) and Cops/Firemen! AND I did not get sick and it was SOOOOO Good!

  • For cheap Mexican, I like Ponce's;  for fancy Mexican, I like Ortega's.  And another vote for Las Cuatro Milpas.  The pork tacos and chorizo/beans are to die for.

  • The Wine Vault.....go for the Saturday night 5 course menu for $25 and $18 wine pairings. www.winevaultbistro.com
  • You can also go into Old Town for good Mexican food.  It is kinda touristy but it is fun.  My favorite Mexican food there is Casa La Guadalajara.  It is on the outskirts of Old Town.
