Looking for 1st birthday ideas

My son will turn one next month. A friend suggested that I have it at a local park. I was just wondering what anyone else might have done for their child's first birthday. I don't want to spend much money. I was thinking of having it at home but was warned of the possible mess. TIA

Re: Looking for 1st birthday ideas

  • My suggestion is having it at home just because at that age there isn't alot to do and its a little more comfortable with all those people for them at home. The mess clean up does stink but having it somewhere costs more and it doesn't make much sense until there is something they can actually participate in. We went to a first bday at a park last year and it was okay but they had to pay for the pavillion and all the food and still had to cleanup. Plus it could be cold.
  • I'd also do it at home.  What kind of mess are you referring to?
  • Thanks. I was thinking at home because of the weather as well. I also thought that since we have Wii and Rockband it would be fun for the adults because my son really doesn't have many friends to invite anyways.

The mess - just the craziness of kids at a bday party I guess.

  • I've learned that the 1st couple of bday parties are really for the parents anyway because they are too little to understand or be excited about it. It'll probably save you money to keep it at home and  be more comfortable for you :)
  • we are doing dd's at home.

I agree with Leila.  DS' bday is Christmas eve so we decided to have it at my mom's house (after naptime) and then family and close friends just stayed after to celebrate Christmas eve that evening.

The 1st party is more for the parents/adults.  And it can be a bit overwhelming for the birthday boy/girl.  All those people staring at them... the pressure of opening the gifts, and the "show" of the birthday cake.... having it at a place that is familar to them might be better for the child.

Of course, we didn't have too many other children running around either.  Good luck!
