Midwives/Doulas/Birthing Centers

Good evening ladies - I'm hoping someone can help me out a little here.

I am currently pregnant, and while I have an OB, I have yet to see him - my first appointment is scheduled for soon.  In the meantime, I am interested in getting more information on local midwives and birthing centers.  In a perfect situation, I would prefer not to give birth in a hospital, but I understand that there's always a chance of complications.  Anyway, I'm having a hard time coming up with anything locally - especially on the southshore and eastbank.

It upsets me that I'm having a hard time locating what I would like, while other cities seem to have an abundance of other options available to pregnant women and their families.  Any recommendations?

Re: Midwives/Doulas/Birthing Centers

  • If I remember correctly, when  I went to some classes at West Jeff, they knew of midwives, doulas, and/or birthing centers.

Call West Jeff Hospital for the nurse who does the pregnancy classes....I completely forgot her name.  I think her last name is Helmstetter.

  • I am pretty sure NolaMary used either a doula or midwife. Check out her bio, I'm pretty sure she has some info in there or her blog.

  • Hi Steph - thanks for your input on the Knot:-)  Just wanted to say "Congratulations!"  How exciting!

Lara is finally pregnant after a couple rounds of IVF - due in July.  She's been told she may need a section - I did the all natural thing! So can't help with your question - she just has to decide between Lakeside and EJ - will probably go with Lakeside...  Best wishes!

  • Thanks Betsy!  That is very exciting - congratulations to her and you!  :)
  • I used a midwife and had a water birth. I did it at Kenner Regional. They have a room with a birthing tub. But now my midwife is in New Orleans. I think the name of her place is woman to woman and her name is Cathy Badeaux. She is a certifed nurse midwife, I think she has rights at Touro. The number is 258-7136
  • Not sure if you're still looking, but Esther DeJong has been highly recommended by a few people I know (dh refused to go with a midwife, but probably will next time around). Good luck and congrats. :)
  • Congrats!?I had a natural birth (no meds) and used a doula...Kate Paxton...not sure if she's still around NOLA. Also, check into the Bradley Method - Google it and it will give you the site and you can find local resources. The lady whose class I attended is no longer teaching. Good luck!!
