Re: LAUSD - Pathetic

  • School report card (although I think this is the first time they are called report cards) are nothing new with school districts.  I believe that  schools  both public and private have to make a report as to what is the school budget, test scores, population stats, etc.   Most schools keep this information on the school website.

It is a very tough time for schools.

  • We need drastic school reform.  Not just in LAUSD, but nationwide.

Agreed, but I also think some parents of LAUSD need to reform. Picking your kid up during the middle of the day to go gang bang is not cool. Freakin hate working with the ghetto ass parents sometimes. So GHETTO!!! Get me out of here!

Wow!  What a horrible thing to say about the kids and their families that you work with.  You really should stand up now and walk out, you can't be doing any good for those kids in your current state of mind.  What do you expect, working in the inner city?

  • It's very ghetto where I work. I do try my best to help them but they are too engulfed in their lifestyles that they can't seem to get out of it. I get frustrated because they come crying to me for help, then I give them help, then they just go back to doing the same thing or they come blaming the school for their lack of following up on our recommendations. I actually do a lot for the kids and the families and have helped a lot of them, more than what most people would be willing to do. But it is very discouraging when you pour all your energy and time only to find that the parents haven't done their part.

I just wish people would stop putting so much blame on the schools. We are good people who work hard under tremendous amount of pressure, limited resources, and have to see a lot of sad cases where we try to do our best, but feel helpless to control the situation at times. Yes, the schools should be held accountable, but where's the parent's accountability? Don't be so quick to judge me.

And yes, I'm thinking of quitting or transfering. Can't do this anymore.

  • How can you say "don't be so quick to judge me"?  You are the one going off about the kids and the ghettoness of the area you work in.  Didn't you realize that when you went there on your first interview?

Your purpose is to serve those kids and I have no idea how you can do that when you sit there and complain about the "ghetto" and "types" of kids you work with.

Somebody in your line of work has been schooled and prepped to deal with any and all types of situations....clearly you have not and you absolutely should quit or transfer...ASAP.

  • I truly think people try to do their best in most cases. There are crappy wealthy parents and crappy poor parents.

If you work with a poorer population (like I do), you have to accept that change is difficult in the BEST of circumstances. Simply trying to get any one of my overweight, WEALTHY diabetes patients to get off the couch and on to a treadmill is damn near impossible. They are as "engulfed" in their lifestyle as anyone else.

But that's the job I chose. I love it.

I also think that LAUSD is absolutely a freaking mess where, yes there are some good teachers and some really bad ones. Needs a complete overhaul.

  • I am not trying to defend julie here, but here is another way to put what she is saying.

Student success is directly related to parent involvement.  Yes the quality of the teacher plays a huge role.  But it is very unfair for parents to just assume that it is the teacher's 100% responibility to teach their kids.  Parents are the first teachers in a child's life and learning starts day 1 from birth.

So, if you are in a community that parent involvement is not as high as it could be, it is up to the teachers and staff to do what they can to try to ensure some success. Teaching is a very hard job and it seems that more and more pressure is being put on the teachers. Which makes, even the good teachers and staff, resent being in the field.

Improvement needs to be a statewide issue.  As a state we rank in the bottom compared to the rest of the country.  That is for both public and private schools.

  • Yes, Marina put it more tactfully.
