Poll: How many houses did you see before you chose yours?

Do you remember? We keep going in circles and I know that just seeing the houses will help us to make a decision - is it weird to feel guilty for wanting to see a lot of houses??? I've never done this before, so I don't know what the "norm" is and I don't want to be annoying by asking to see too many!

Re: Poll: How many houses did you see before you chose yours?

  • 3! ?Well, 2 were condos and 1 was a townhouse all in the same complex. ?We ended up buying the townhouse, though I really wish that for what we paid, we would have looked around because we probably could have found something with a yard. ?Then I would no be as anxious to move again!
  • First time around, one.  But we fell into a crazy-great FSBO deal, there.

Second time around, it depends.  We tried to find as many addresses online as we could, and we eliminated A LOT of options just by driving by them.

Those we couldn't find addresses for and those we wanted to see more of, we made appointments to see.  Probably went into five or six houses, and we narrowed it down to the two we liked best.

    Good luck!

  • At least a dozen, probably more.  Were didn't really have a deadline for when we had to be out of our last place so we just held out until we found a house that we both really liked.

I don't know that we're really the "norm" though. For one thing, MIL was our realtor. She wanted to make sure we found a good place, so she would have gone to every house in the city with us if need be :)  Also, our budget was pretty low when we were looking. A lot of the places looked fine online, but when we got there we found out that they needed more work or updating that we were willing to do. It took us weeding through quite a few houses we never would have bought before we had a couple we liked and could consider.  If we had found houses we liked right away, we wouldn't have needed to look at so many.

It's a huge investment. I say take as much time as you need to find a place that's really right for you. It sucks to go through all the trouble of buying and moving only to decide you don't like the house you've gotten yourself in to.

  • I think about 15.  It was the first house both DH and I could agree on!

  • I looked at 2 townhouses and 2 single family houses.  The house I bought was the first single family house I looked at and knew immediately I wanted it.  It was in a good location and was in my budget.  Plus I didn't really want to live in a townhouse.  I could have looked around but was afraid someone would snag this one before I did.

  • I want to say we went to at least 20 to see in person and looked at countless others by driving by the area to see what we thought about it and looked at pictures online.

Do what you need to feel confident in your decision.  Good luck!

  • We bought the first house we looked at! BUT we looked at about 10 other houses before we decided.

  • Oh I bet we looked at at least 25 maybe even 40.  And that doesn't include about 15 we drove past that we decided weren't even worth looking at.
  • I'm with Brandy on this one- over 25. We have been looking since the beginning of the summer. We are looking for something in our price range that we feel comfortable with and possibly a garage or ability to build one. I got really anxious at first and wanted to find one. Now I feel that I just want to be sure and feel right about the one when we find it. I am fine with renting for now until we find it but I know what you mean about feeling like you are going to be looking at too many. Take your time!
  • We looked at about 6 over the course of a couple weeks before deciding on our house.  Once we seen the house we ended up buying we knew right away it was the one.  We actually had to put an offer in the night we saw it bc there were at least 2 other offers coming in that same night.  We even saw the next couple pull up as we were leaving.
  • We probably looked at 15-20 with our realtor, but had a spreadsheet of ones that we found ourselves and always drove by them on our own first. That cancelled a lot out immediately. We also did a lot of open houses on Sundays.
  • We looked at 12.  In the middle, we found the house we are putting an offer on (tomorrow!), but we wanted to still look to see if we found anything we liked better.  I say look at as many as you want -- you don't want to settle... it's a HUGE investment!!!!!  (My list, by the way, started out with 21 houses to go look at... unfortunately, some were pending or sold by the time we were ready to start looking)!

  • There have been 6 so far that we have gone in, 20-30 others I've eliminated from the info sheets (the ones from the REA not just the web search), and I've lost count of how many I've just hated from the listings online

    Cancer sucks.
  • 1st place - townhouse - just that one.  it was a bargain and they were going quick (another one had sold and we saw this one before they even put it on the market)

    2nd place - sfh - 6 or 7

3rd - current one.  we looked at about 25 resales and probably went to 10 different neighborhoods to look at builders

  • I am thinking back and recalling more than a dozen that we saw with our real estate agent.  We saw more through open houses before we started working with our agent too.  I don't think it's weird to see a lot.  It's their job to show you them and if it's needed to be done to find the right house for your family then I'd keep asking to see more!  Good luck!!

  • I think we went to about a dozen or so with our realtor.  We also did a bunch of drive-bys and some open houses.

Don't feel guilty about wanting see a lot of houses.  It's a big decision, and this is what you REA gets paid to do.

  • I second what some others have said.  I think we went to over 20 with the realtor, but we did so many more open houses and then drive bys of ones we could already cross off the list.

  • We looked for almost 2 years, casually, and probably saw close to 50 or so houses.  My MIL is a realtor though and took us to see anything and everything that was in our price range, so in the respect we were lucky.

I agree that you should look at as many houses as it takes to find "'the one", and I'm a firm believer that you'll "just know" which is the right house for you.  Good luck and have fun!

  • We looked at close to 20.  Actually, we looked at one, put an offer on it (along with 2 other people on the same day) and didn't get it.  Then we looked at about 19 more before deciding on this one.

  • I'd say we actually went inside 20-25, at first just going to open houses by ourselves, and then with our realtor later on... but like other PP said, who knows how many we drove by to check out... and sped away! ;)
