We Are Buying Our First House!

My husband and I are starting the search for our first house.  We're currently in Pomona, looking around the local cities like Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, Upland, Montclair and Claremont.  We didn't think of looking in Diamond Bar or Chino Hills, but we did see a few houses on realtor.com in those areas that we thought could work out great for us!

I'd really like to hear some advice about the local areas.  Anyone who has lived in any of this cities for a while, any information you can give us would be great!  I'm a Glendora native, and I've only been in Pomona since May, and he's lived in the Arcadia/Monrovia area all his life.

We're really concerned with good neighborhoods vs. bad neighborhoods (crime, gang violence, vandalism), school districts (no kids yet, but plans for the future), and the usual.  Also, we are looking for a real estate agent, if you have/know any good ones you'd like to recommend, we'd appreciate it!

 TIA!

Re: We Are Buying Our First House!

  • Well howdy neighboor!  I'm in Claremont, lived here for 4 years, and lived in Montclair 4 years before that.    We live in the area of Claremont that borders Pomona on one side, and Montclair on the other.  I actually really like Claremont on the whole. My neighborhood is working class, racially and age diverse.  Most of my neighboors are really nice, and the ones I don't know just keep to themselves.  In the 4 years we've lived here we've never once heard of any kind of domestic disturbance, burglary or any other crime.  I do know that the bridge that leads under the freeway at College is closed at night to keep kids from tagging.  But that's about as bad as it gets.  Claremont has a really good school system too.  I really enjoy the downtown area for restaurants, entertainment and the farmers market on the weekends.

There's a house around the corner from mine that's listed at 220,000!  Surprise  Houses in this area were going for close to 600,000 3 years ago!  Ask away if there's anything else!

  • Ooh!  Whats the bed/bath count on that baby?  Big Smile  That's right in our price range.
  • I grew up in Claremont.  Email me at nbbride at gmail dot com if you have any specific questions.  Went to all public schools (and I have opinions on all of them) etc.

Here's the house.  Judging by the outside (I walk my dog past here everynight) I'd say it's probably a fixer upper.  But at that price, what isnt!?

I'll get the phone number of the realtor for you when I walk the dog.

  • Thanks!  That's so thoughtful!

Ladies, I would love to hear what you have to say about the schools, and the retailer.  I will certainly email you.  I generally Nest at work and I don't have access to my personal email, but I'll drop you a line from home when I have a chance!  Thanks again!

  • Congrats! I live in Monrovia, and I love it. It's a bit far from where I work (Burbank) but the neighborhood is WONDERFUL.

I go to San Dimas every once in a while for the shopping. It's has a great shopping area and kids clothes, etc. Don't know much about the area other than that, though. I do hear that their High School football rules! (get it?)
