Mindy, Marina, etc........food for toddler update?

Man, I am trying to go for variety but am running out of ideas....and I am doing stuff they can eat on their own for school so I don't send yogurt or cottage cheese....

My Go-Tos:

Spinach bites

Bisquick zuchinni pie (I vary the veggies)

Pasta, pasta, pasta of all sorts

TJ's meatballs

Cheese slivers

Scrambled eggs

Every kind of fruit - they LOVE berries, melons, mango, grapes, 'nana

Waffles, pancakes, toast sticks (which they sometimes throw on the floor)

peas and carrots

crackers, yogurt bites, cheerios..............

They don't like luncheon meat, avocado or tofu.

One of the mother's at work is Armenian and we were sharing ideas  - her kid is eating toubeleh, and all sorts of cool stuff. I am like "Uhmmmmm, chicken fingers.......".

Any recipes????????

  • BIP but I do see a lot of kid food!  Do they like sushi rolls?  One of the mom puts in california looking rolls in her daughters lunch box.

Of course we see the standard pasta, mac 'n cheese, peanut butter/jelly sandwiches, chicken fingers, etc.  Do they like tomatoes? How about cucumber?  We're seeing more of that since a lot of kids don't do carrots well.  How about corn?

We see a lot of leftovers from the night before ... chicken and rice (not sure how well rice would go over with toddlers though, that is usually quite a mess), pasta with veggies and meat, etc.  I haven't made them in a long time and I'm not 100% sure on the recipe but I think it's ground beef (cooked), corn and a can of cream of potato soup, mix all together.  Take a can of the biscuits in the refridgerated section and line a muffin tin with a biscuit.  Fill with the meat mixture and bake.  Super good and easy for kids to eat.

Yogurt/cottage cheese is tough for little ones, but of course string cheese or cheese sticks are a huge hit.

What about a roll up?  Tortilla with cream cheese, spinach, ham (if they'll eat that), roll it up and cut it into slices.  A lot of my "no sandwich" kids love roll ups.  I also see bagels and cream cheese a lot (we do that for snack).  One of our kids favorite snacks is graham crackers with either peanut butter or cream cheese on it.

When it gets warm you can freeze the go-gurts and they make a little less messy treat (I'd probably wait till your guys are 2 or so though for that now that I think about it ... they have to be able to coordinate getting it out).

    Hope that helps a little!

  • I am not in the "to-go" stage yet.  so I am afraid that  I don't have much advise.  But I really like your list.  Thanks for the tips.

But here are some of j-man's likes.  shredded chicken (I get the costco baked chicken, shredded and recook it with a hint of butter and seasoning). I dont know the name of this, but it is ground beef cooked in a watered down tomatoe sauce with bits of carrots andpotatoes (warning, this is more of  a warm dish).

  • Too funny...

I check my email and there is an email from babycenter.com, topic... foods for toddlers.  Anyway, there was a link for a food search.  I looked up school lunches for you.

  • Gavin eats most of everything you listed.  Our biggest obstacle is veggies...he pretty much doesn't eat ANY!  It makes me crazy but I just keep giving them to him and figure some day he'll eat them.

He uses a little "spork" to eat so that he can either scoop or stab at his food.  He uses it for a bit and when he gets tired of it he uses his hands again.

I feel much like you with the food rut....but some other things that come to mind are:

    TJ's cereal bars

    TJ's frozen brown rice

Hmmm...that's all that comes to mind right now.

  • Veggies! Talk about throwing things!
  • When they throw it, take everything away and tell them if they are going to throw their food then they must not be hungry and are done eating.  It may or may not work, but it's worth a try. :)

I usually suggest masking the veggies in something ... stews, cooked into a meat pie, etc.

    Bye

  • My boys love hummus and will just dip their fingers in and lick it off.

Alisa - my boys hate avocado too, but one day I mixed it with plain yogurt and added some agave nectar and they love it like that.

Also raisins are the big thing now. I can't get my boys to eat meat, but they love peas and corn! I did get them to eat TJs chicken drummets the other day - I finished the leftovers, yummy! Also if I give them ketchup or yogurt to dip their food in, they usually eat more.  Quesadillas are a hit with them too and crackers with any cheese spread. Also I've mixed some rice and beans together and they will eat that. It's also helps they learn to use a spoon since I stick it on the spoon for them. They also love (me too) tj sweet potato fries!
