Thanks - you know I think I am being paranoid about feeding my kids "big boy" food. Can a 21-month old eat tortilla roll-ups? Should I be cutting up their waffles in pieces or do I look like a nut? Should I be slicing their bananas super thin? Can I give them a whole chicken nugget?
I give them little cookies and crackers and stuff and they are fine.
And should they be eating with spoons now?
Thanks for the help!
Re: Kalichick!
Alisa,
I give julian a whole banana, whole apples, chicken strips. I still cut up a few things, like spaghetti and veggies but all in all, I try not too. I have even given him a whole sandwich, cheese burger, and a small slice of pizza and he is fine.
Right now he is using a fork and a spoon and has done so for quite a few months. However, when he can't scoop with a spoon or fork, he uses his fingers to put it on the fork/spoon, then eats. Soo cute.
Hey Alisa,
Yes, they can eat a tortilla roll-up. Just cut it into slices. I wouldn't try and give that to them whole.
Waffles, for school, I'd cut them up as I think that could be messy otherwise. Bananas, nah, they should be able to eat those whole. I watched one of our 29 months olds eat a whole cucumber yesterday.
I would say they can master a chicken nugget whole as well. Although, I do still have some parents that cut them up (we think it's funny when we see them cut up for a 3.5 year old).
Apples I would cut in slices, grapes I'd cut in half (choking hazard) ... anything that's stringy (i.e. pasta like Marina said) I'd cut ... otherwise yeah, start giving it to them in bigger pieces. Maybe start but cutting in half rather than in quarters and graduate to whole.
I would start giving them spoons, yes. They won't be good at it for a while but it's good to get them using it. Yogurt, cottage cheese, pasta, etc. Have them start working on using utensils.
Will do. Thanks!
I am one of THOSE parents, aren't I? I knew they were laughing at me at my daycare.
Probably not, Alisa!! You guys are still young and you're a first time mom. We give you credit for that! hehe
I have a 4.5 (almost 5) year old that mom cuts his pancakes (which she gives him for lunch sometimes) into bite size pieces. That one we do shake our heads at.
