? From a Southerner!

Hi Ladies,

DH and I will be in Chicago next weekend.  The last time I was somewhere with significant amounts of snow was in 2nd grade.  :)  We plan on walking around quite a bit, and I've got all my cold weather gear ready to go.  My only question is what kind of shoes/boots do you wear if you're planning on walking.  I don't own any practical boots.  I'll probably buy a pair, but would like some suggestions.  I don't need anything that will last forever, but warm and dry are very important!  :)  TIA!!

Re: ? From a Southerner!

  • We are getting record cold temps right now.  I have a pair of cute boots for when there isn't 3 feet of snow and ice, and I also have a pair of knock-off ugg boots (they have to be water proofed) for the snow.  I would say whatever you get, get something that is going to keep you warm, and that you can wear 2 pairs of socks with.  Bring a lot of warm clothes because it's feezing here (literally). It's about -2 right now.

  • i agree with the PP. i wear boots most of the winter in chicago...and 2 pairs of socks are warmest and most comfortable.  i'd avoid uggs since there's a ton of snow out and they'll get wet.  straight-up leather boots are great.  the riding boots-over-skinny jeans look works really well in chicago right now! (keeps your legs warm and bottom of jeans dry).  i also have a cute pair of tall boots from north face too (casual, not dressy, but waterproof and warm).

don't forget the hat, gloves and scarf :)

  • I have a pair of knock off UGG boots from Sporto.  I had to put a waterproofing spray on it initially.  However, I just went to walk the dogs in the -6 degrees tonight and between the boots & 2 pairs of socks I wasn't feeling the cold.  I would also recommend if you have runners spandex or something of that nature that you might want to wear that under your jeans since an extra layer is good if you are going to be walking a lot.
  • I agree with all PP's! Warm and waterproof is the way to go. Altho it shouldn't be as cold next weekend as it is now, it will still be cold. :)

    Enjoy your trip?
