I have this student that is finding ways to avoid playing at recess (yes, I know why and we are working to solve the issue). All last week he was taking blank nurse notes to the office. Now, he is hiding in my classroom during recess and lunch. I caught him yesterday and had a big talk with him about it. The talk did not help, he did it again today.
It creeps me out because I come in my class, thinking no one is here and call my hubby. Next thing I know a see a figure coming at me from the the corner of my eye. I nearly jump each time.
So, gotta talk to mom again.

awe sorry!!
Is he being bullied??? Therefore afraid to go out to recess??
Funny you mention bullying. That is what the parent is saying. We, meaning the principal and I, have done a lot of investigation on this and have found no proof. Even the recess and noon aides are keeping an eye out on this kids.. but nothing.
The kid even did a "photo line-up" with student's photos and nothing.
It is a very odd situation. Right now I feel like Nancy Drew, trying to solve this mystery.
has he said which kid is bullying him???
Maybe its not physical but verbal???
Yes he gives a name, first only, and the principla pulled the class pictures of all the students in 1-3rd with that first name. He was unable to identify a student.
I have asked some students from class to hang out with him to see if they notice anything funny... and nothing.
There other issues with this student that would take too long to get into. However, I dd talk to mom again to today. She seems just as confused as I am but promised to talk to him about not coming into my class.
Marina,
Might I suggest instead of banishing him from the classroom, instead giving him a safe place to go where someone knows where he is? I don't like the idea of him hiding in the classroom and no one knowing he's there (then again for me that's a HUGE liability), but if something is going on that he won't talk about he might just need a safe haven. Given that he might open up. While I know that recess time is your break time too, is there something you could give him to do in the classroom during recess (or at least once or twice a week) and try and transition him back outside? Maybe he's really bad at sports and feels out of place with the other boys? Try and find out what he does like to do and buddy him up with someone with the same interests even if it's someone from a different class?
You're a great teacher so I'm sure you've thought of all of this, I'm just trying to throw some insight in there. Also, is it possible that it's something going on at home???
Kim,
I love when you give out advise, you always have some good suggestions. We tried letting him relax in the office for about 2 weeks then transitioned him out and back to the yard. However, that was when he started taking nurse notes to go back.
So, when I thought it was just a recess issue, he started taking nurses notes in the middle of class and trying to go to the office to go home. Then he would just walk out of the class, not telling anyone. The mom was very strong at saying it was a recess issue but when I told her about him leaving the class (trying to leave) and the nurse notes in the middle of class, she did not know what to say. Mom kept saying it was this one kid, who was not in my class, so what is the explaination for the in-class behavior.
Like I said, there are lots of issues with this kid. Some academic and some mental. Right now the only thing I can do is set up a student study team and go from there.
