Bummed. I just found out they my company has hired someone for the position, I thought I would be getting promoted too.

I was really really counting on it, and I have been working my ass of for it, but no luck.

It's taking everything I have to not cry my eyes out.

I'm so sorry to hear this.  Did they post the job for applications? Meaning, did you even get to apply or did they just bring in someone from the outside?  Not that that makes it any easier.  But maybe if they just brought someone in from the outside you could go to your boss and ask what you needed to do to be considered.  This will show how committed to are to the company and how much you want to move up.

I'm brand new here as of today, but I was touched by your post. A similar situation happened to me and it really took me a long time to get over it. My only advice is to realize that everything happens for a reason and hopefully the reason will reveal itself sooner rather than later. I'm thinking that mine didn't happen because I'm supposed to be going to nursing school. Waiting for my acceptance letter now-should know by end of month. I hope you're better now since you posted this a couple of weeks ago.
