i may possibly moving out to san diego in the net few months. I was just wondering what is the average cost of an apartment out there. or in general just the cost of living. im kinda clueless when it comes to all of this.
Re: possibly moving
We were paying $1425 (1 bed 1 bath, garage and pet rent, about 701 sq. ft.) in Rancho Penasquitos.
Cost of living is expensive. Everything from the gas, to the movies is more expensive than other parts of the country.
Good luck!
I have lived at the beach in a two bedroom for $2000.00 and I have lived in South Park in a one bedroom for $750.00. It really varies based on where you want to live.
Like pp said, everything here is pretty expensive compared to many parts of the country. That being said, it is a great place to live and I love it!

I don't know about the money thing. I have only lived in CA but I definitely do not make enough to buy a house by myself. Not even close unless I want to move out to the burbs.
I feel like I am being a negative nancy though. I love it here. I think you just have to decide what is important to you. Of course, I don't know what you make but for me, I would rather cut down on certain things and live here than live in the snow.
**Edited to say that you live in AZ so you don't live in the snow.

*laughs* Hell NO!! When I moved back out here in 2003 most of the jobs that I was finding wanted you to have a bachelors degree and be willing to work for $10 an hour! DH and I make just over $100K combined and we cannot afford to buy a house! We could easily make a $2K mortgage payment but coming up with $50K-$75K for a downpayment is damn near impossible when we support 2 households.
As for rent...we live in Escondido and had a 1000 sq ft loft apartment that was only $899 a month plus $20 for water and trash. We are now renting a house that is only slightly bigger but has a yard, washer and dryer, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms for $1500 a month. It all depends on where you want to live. The closer you are to the coast, the more you typically pay in rent..there are some exceptions to that...I have coworkers that rent a house in oceanside across the street from the beach and they pay $900 a month BUT the house is rundown, there is no parking and an airplane bathroom is bigger than the kitchen!
Another note on wages...I transferred out here with my part time job and I was making more money at the Denver location than people in my department were making at the Anaheim location. Cost of living in SoCal is much higher than the Denver metro area. The wages in Denver were $1-$3 higher than the wages out here.
NO! The money out here is terrible. I was working in Manhattan for 5 years and took a big paycut when we came out here. DEPRESSING!
Plus we paid a lot more in rent. When we were renting in little italy we paid $1925 for a 2 bed/2 bath and that was on the cheap side for the building...
You can do cheaper in North Park, South Park and probably even crown point/PB area...
Good luck!
