Public Transportation - LA and San Fran
Hi Ladies. DH and I are taking a trip out west in August. I am curious about the public transportation available in LA and San Francisco. We will be renting a car to drive from Phoenix, to Grand Canyon, and then to Vegas, and then to LA...however, I was curious as to whether or not we would really need to keep that rental car during the few days we visit LA. We will need another car to drive up the coast to San Francisco, but again, am wondering if we would need to keep the rental to get around SF. I believe we plan to stay in Anaheim (LA) , and somewhere close to the Wharf (SF). I just dont want to pay for a rental for all that time when it may just sit in the parking garage while we are there. Your thoughts/experiences are appreciated!
Re: Public Transportation - LA and San Fran
You will need a car in Southern California. Anaheim is actually in Orange County not Los Angeles. I am guessing you will be going to Disneyland. If you are staying near the park and not going anywhere else you will not need a car. If you plan to explore you will need a car. There is a bus system in Orange County that is decent but I would not recommend it for a out of town visitor. You will probably want to post on the LA board if you want more information on LA public transportation.
There is better public transportation in SF but I would ask the Northern California board.
I agree with the pp that you'll need the car in the LA area.
DH and I honeymooned in San Francisco, and we kept our car in parking at the B&B the whole time and walked/used the bus system. We actually bought City Passes (citypass.com --> can't figure out how to make it "clicky") because it was cost effective and easy; we were able to visit a bunch of museums and not worry about bus fare.
Have fun, and let us know if you need any more info.
Having lived in both Orange County and up in the Bay Area....you will definitely want to have a car in Anaheim/L.A. but there's really no need for one in SF. In SF, the BART and Muni can get you pretty much anywhere you need to go relatively cheaply. Also, the city isn't so big that a cab ride is gonna cost you much. A cab ride will most likely cost less than whatever parking fee you'd wind up paying if you had a car.
Down south though...public transport isn't super visitor friendly. It's not very friendly for people who live there either. ) It's a lot better to have a car unless you're gonna get a hotel right by Disneyland and not go anywhere else.
Ditto Beki. Parking is really hard in SF. My brother went to USF and he couldnt have his car because parking was horrible. In LA, its a little easier, more necessary to have a car.
