Moms ? re: potty training

I know it is really early, but I was wondering what things we can do to prepare or start.

I have been teaching her that when I smell poo-poo to acknowledge it and she has been really good about that.  Now, when she goes poo-poo, she comes up to me and says "poo-poo" and points where it is (usually in the front though).

I know she may be a little young, but I was kind of thinking maybe she is ready to start.  She is 14 month, almost 15 in a few weeks.

Re: Moms ? re: potty training

  • every child is so different.  while 15 mo was too early for Jos, i wouldn't discount "talking up" the issue.  i gave in and let the girls come into the bathroom with me.  i'd talk about how big girls go pee-pee and poo-poo in the toilet (or what ever you want to call it).  i'd talk about the steps: feel it coming on, sit down, go, wipe, flush, wash hands, dry hands.

we got an elmo book and elmo dvd

i'd suggest talking about it first.  then you can take baby steps from there...nekkid time is fun if it's warm out, training pants w/ plastic/rubber covers, pull ups, cloth panties...

take your time, gauge her, no need in rushing it because when it's time...it can goes very smoothly. (that's another oprah)

  • Elmo DVD???  That will work.  She worships Elmo....ha ha!
  • She has to be able to communicate that she has to go in some way.  Whether it's signing or actually saying it.  Start with taking her in with you (a lot of parents have to get past the "ew" factor and just do it ... they are going to model the behavior).  When you put her in the tub, let her sit on the potty.

I'm very anti-potty chair, go for a potty seat instead (you're not going to have a potty chair with you everywhere you go) if you feel it's necessary.

I wouldn't push it, but you can certainly start getting her used to the idea.

  • ps - love the new siggy pic!  love the clothes, love katie!  the the denim skirt  ...is it one i gave you?

  • Yea Mia, it is the one you gave her.  It is sooooo cute!
  • Hi Julie! :)  One thing a friend of mine does is take the poop and put it in the toilet.  They walk over to the toilet together with the poo in the diaper and let it drop in and say something like "poop goes in the toilet".  It sounded like a good idea to me.
