A very "maybe" move to Nevada - advice helpful!

My husband and I are currently in the job market (well, he is...I'm just the tag along...) and we've heard lots of good stuff about the Henderson/Vegas area...the CCSD? ?My husband is a teacher and all of the out of state stuff we've found all points to that school district...

He's a band director so anything specific to band/music/instrumental stuff would be helpful and about the basic quality of life/cost of living.

?Thanks so much - maybe I'll be joining you guys soon!

??

  • Mrs. Wombat can answer this more effectively, but... I am pretty sure there is a hiring freeze right now. The budget was cut in the middle of the school year be a pretty sizeable amount.
  • Yep, CCSD it is.  All of Las Vegas is in Clark County, which makes us one humongous district.  RSP is right about the hiring freeze.  It's been in effect for awhile now.  All school budgets were cut by 70% this year and they're going to be cutting them even more soon.  It's completely ridiculous.  I don't know when you guys were planning to move, but I would definitely contact the school district and see what you can find out about job availability.  Since your husband is specialized, they may need him.  Another tidbit you may want to know is that they are discussing a possible/probable 6% salary cut for teachers and they will most likely not be giving raises for 2 years at least.  Seriously, if you have other options, I would not recommend moving here as a teacher right now.
  • The cost of living is quite reasonable here - especially if you were to buy a house now.  However, I agree with the above posters, there is a hiring freeze at the moment and the governor is talking about a 6% cut in teachers pay.  I think CCSD is an okay place to teach, but Nevada rates as one of the worst states (#49 I think) in terms of education, so I would never send my kids to public school here.
