Visiting from Boston

Hi girls, MH is going to have a job interview in the Dane County area....I am  coming with him to check out real estate and the area.. Any Tips??

Which are the best places to look?  TIA!!

Re: Visiting from Boston

  • It really depends on where his job is located and what your house budget would be.  With the housing market lower there are some great deals to be had but it depends on what part of the county you'd be looking at.
  • I think the job is in Dodgeville...
  • OK, well Madison is the largest city in Dane county but is probably about 45+ minutes away from Dodgeville from the far west side.  Mount Horeb is a nice town that is a little closer and there are a lot of nice homes for sale right now.  Dodgeville is a nice place but it is a small town.  My grandpa grew up there and my husbands sister is currently teaching and living there.  Verona wouldn't be a bad place to look either but there you're looking around 40 or so minutes to Dodgeville.  The good thing about the commute would be that it's a state hwy and there really wouldn't be much traffic.  Most people would be going the other way.  Boscobel is also closer to Dodgeville.  That's a smaller town as well.  Since I live in Madison, I don't know a lot about towns south west of Dodgeville.  Mineral Point is a cute town, but it's even smaller than Dodgeville.  It just depends on what you're looking for.

You should easily be able to get a very nice house in any of those places for under 175,000-200,000.  If you look into Dodgeville/Mineral point or father south west from Madison your price would probably be lower than that even.  Verona would be the most expensive of the areas I listed above because it's closest to Madison and a very nice town with great schools.

    Hope that helps!

  • If the job is in Dodgeville, both Mount Horeb & Verona are really nice towns with good schools. According to mapquest, Verona is 35 minutes from Dodgeville while Mount Horeb is a 25 minute drive.

  • Mt. Horeb is supposed to have one of the best school districts in the area according to my co-worker.  His wife is a principal at Mt. Horeb so they did a ton of research when they moved up here about school districts (test results, drop out rates, crime in the school, what % go on to college, etc.).   It's got a great small town atmosphere but is still close to everything.  Mt. Horeb was our second chose for places to live when we were looking to buy a house.  And there are a ton of houses for sale in the area for very low prices.
  • Thanks so much ladies.....
