What are some of your favorite places/things to do/restaurants in KC that might not be run of the mill ideas?

I had to think awhile to answer my own question. These things aren't necessarily "hidden" but they are something you should try if you haven't already
-Starlight Theater. Fun to watch a show outside in the summer. The shows for this upcoming summer look really good!
-Strouds. Yummy homestyle food. My aunt & uncle who used to live in KC always want to go eat there when they come back to visit.
I always forget about Union Station. I, personally am a fan of doing kiddish things, and Science City is so much fun! Even if you just go walk around and look at Union Station, it is well worth it. And the restaurant in there is so much fun. (Can't remember the name of it...)
Another much cheaper option that I love is to go to the Strawberry Hill area (I-70 and 7th St.) and go to all of the little Croatian/Polish bakeries, old time butchers, etc. Most of the area has been taken over by the Hispanic population, so if you're brave you can get some great Mexican food and see some fun cultural/historic things. Not the best area, but I think it's so interesting to see some of older KC.
I also LOVE LOVE LOVE going to main street Parkville, MO and seeing all of there fun little shops and cafes and things. I think it is so charming. Cute art galleries, Amish furniture, antiques, the university, restaraunts. So adorable!
Side note: If you like Stroud's, give Granny's (Legends) a try. Not quite as good as Stroud's, but very close, less expensive and less crowded. I know when they first opened some people went and hated, but they have now worked out all of the kinks, and I think it's fab!
Burr Oak Woods is a MO Conservation Area in Blue Springs, Truman Library, the WWI Museum at the Liberty Memorial, the Coterie Theatre in Crown Center, the Agriculutre Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs, the Toy and Miniature Museum at/near the UMKC Campus, the Dog Park at Shawnee Mission Park.
Food wise I have to recommend the NY Bakery & Delicatessan at 7016 Troost. It is the home of the 'Awesome Reuben' and some of the best brownies I've ever had. Also, Andres Confiserie Suisse at 5018 Main. They create fabulous chocolates & pastries, and serve lunch. For lunch they always serve quiche lorraine, cheese quiche and two other lunches on a rotational basis. They put out a menu for each month.
My SIL lives there in a little house that has been in DH's family since they came from Poland at the turn of the century. It is a neat area. Little scary, but neat.
