Adoption Process

CCBride -- I saw your post on the ttc post so I figured I would give an update and throw in my 2 cents.

I sent in the paperwork for adoption this week and was fingerprinted.  I am on Maggie's birth certificate since we have a civil union in NJ.  What we were told by our attorney is that at birth certificate is a "statement of record."  Other states do not have to recognize a statement of record, so if we are traveling (not just if we move) I could be considered a legal stranger to Maggie.  In contrast, other states do have to recognize a court order, which a second parent adoption is.

So, I would advise you to look into it further when your little one comes.  I tend to be a cautious person, especially when it comes to the baby, so I may be dotting extra "i"s and crossing extra "t"s but I would rather that to having a problem in the futrue.

hugs,
Joanna

Re: Adoption Process

  • Thanks so much for that info. That is really good to know! I will probably talk to my cousin who is an attorney and have her give me some legal advice. I would rather be safe than sorry too. I hope things are going well with Maggie.

  • Thanks for letting us know and congratulations, again. We plan on being extra extra safe too :-)
