Re: Question about today
I also never said it wasn't a historic occasion. And I don't intend to be snippy but I don't appreciate people misinterrupting my words. Nor did I say anything about how he felt about being a celebrity like....I just said I don't like how he is being treated like one. Never said anything about he is reacting to it all. But apparently everyone is reading on the defense and taking it as they want. You have a right to disagree but everyone should read clearly before responding that's all.

I think that anyone who doesn't see why there is a certain hoop-la over this presidency seriously takes their civil liberties for granted.
And that's all I'm saying on this subject.
Oh well... politics are always touchy, and we all have different opinions.
Directed towards me or what!
I just hope that he is remembered as the president who did something amazing and not as the president who happened to be half black.
PS. I don't take my civil liberties for granted either.
But that's just it, YOU see him as just a man, but not everyone in this country can say the same. The KKK still exists. We still have to have laws that specifically address crimes that are enacted because of hatred of other races, genders, sexual orientations, you name it. The fact that we have the first black president, mixed or otherwise, is just a sign of how far we have come, but the media coverage that's based SOLELY on his race shows how far we still (we, collectively) have to go. I'm not by any means stating that all of the media are focused on his race, but there are certain outlets that are. For example, here at work, the TV we were all gathered around was set to Fox. 99% of the faces shown in the crowd were black. There were more than a million people out there, is Fox really trying to convince us that the only people who support Obama are black? Sure seemed that way to me, because that's what they CHOSE to cover. It doesn't mean that all million plus people are there only because he's black. You have to take everything, media coverage included, with a grain of salt and realize that there are opposing views.
Personally, I agree with Lily and others who said they see him as a person, not as a race, and I'm excited about the changes he's trying to make. His speech was very positive, and he truly seems to be a good combination of realist & optimist. That's why it's historic to me, but you can't just ignore the bigger history of it just because you personally think it's irrelevant. It isn't.
I was always raised to not take race into account. Swearing in the 44th president is a historic event. I don't think it is any more historic because of who his parents were. I honestly never took race into account, and I've never thought of him as the 44th president who is black. I just look at him as the 44th president who will either help the country out of its funk or not.
He is who he is and will not think of him as a black president only as the president of America.
I don't think of anyone of you as the white woman on the nest just as intelligent people on the nest who are opinionated friends. I have never taken race into consideration for anything and I just can't start now.
Ok but isnt it wrong to look at someone and ignore their heritage?? I mean someones background helps make them who they are. To look at him and say I see a man not a Black man is wrong too. He is a black man and that has caused him issues in life that he overcame. Your race is part of who you are. We are all proud of our heritage. To ignore someones heritage and say you dont see race is wrong too.
I dont think I am saying this perfectly. But hopefully you know what I mean.
I understand that it's historic, because he's half black, but I'm sure alot of past presidents had some black lineage in them somewhere. I just think that it's more of a circus than an inauguration (and I'm just talking about the theatrics...nothing else implied). It's almost as if people have already decided that he's going to be a good president. He has a heck of alot of expectations to live up to!
A lot of you are bringing up really good points. Echoing closly in this discussion to what I'm thinking.
However, Anna for the win regarding putting her cat in office.
I know what you mean...
Anytime there is change from the 'typical,' it's a big deal, especially in the 'white boys club' that is US politics. Had things turned out differently and Hillary were elected, her sex would be brought up over and over again. Rhetorically speaking, would one then say, her being a female isn't that big of a deal??!! NO.... A female President will be MAJOR, as will any non-white, male figure. It's just a matter of fact in US politics....
Lily-I try to see people just as people, no races, gender, sexual preference but as much as I try I do still put labels on people. That is my consciencely trying not to as well. There are people who have been raise to hate certian groups of people just as you and I were raised to see them just as people.
In the end it has nothing to what we each feel individually....yes a lot of us don't look at him as a black man b/c we are better then that and don't judge people by race but overall ALOT of people do. I agree with what others said in that yes this is an amazing day, b/c even though I never looked at him as a black man alot of people did and yet he is still standing where he is, which years ago would of never been possible or even though about.
I teared up looking at these young children who are black and the grins on their face b/c to most of them being president could never be a dream for them but b/c it just didn't happen and now it is and that for me is amazing....I can't even imagine what it feels like for them.
As for those saying he's bi racial....yes he is....but you all have to agree that a bi racial person is always labeled as black. Nobody will ever consider a bi racial person as a white person if they are labeling them by race and that's just the way it is, which is a shame but it's how it is
Saying that this is the same as every other president being sworn in is hard to agree with b/c it's not....it's different in so many ways.....but mostly b/c of his race b/c even for those of us that don't look at him that way it's a good feeling to see someone "different" given the chance.
Well no good came out of it for you and I. But somewhere in this country is a little black girl who wants to be an actress, and she is looking up to Hally Berry saying, yes I can do that, cause look she did it.
My ENTIRE life I wanted to be a teacher. If I never had a female teacher, and knew that there was NEVER a female teacher in history, I would think it was IMPOSSIBLE and maybe even give up. SO when someone is the FIRST to do something, they are showing the world it can be done and now people who strive for that have hope.
terminator turned governor.....hahahaha!
Sorry politics and media are probably some of the things I loathe most in life along with corporate america. Okay, I am going to pack my bags now and head for another country.
There are so many things wrong with this statement.
Being a man/woman, black/white doesn't make a good president. What you do with your four years is what decideds if you are a good president or not.
Looking up to people isn't what makes your dreams come true. It's ambition and the ability to look diversity in the face that makes dreams come true.
I never saw a female physics major before, but I still went and beat all the boys at their game. If it's something you really want out of life, no one should have to do it first so that you know you can do it.
Please don't try to infer meaning. What I was trying to say is that in reality we all came from similar roots, whether they are known or not. We're all more alike than can be seen by the naked eye. "A man should not be judged by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character." We do not know who President Barack Obama is and only time will tell.
This is a good idea, and in a perfect world it would be like that. I agree that ambition and strength and determination are all part of success. But all in all, it just doenst work that way. I am sure there are many people who gave up on a dream becasue they were told it can never be done, because nobody ever did it. The people that overcome all of the odds against them and are the "firsts" become our heros. Following some of the logic here we shouldnt celebrate Amelia Earhardt, Jackie Robinson and Sandra Day O'Connor.
The fact that you make that statement shows how your life has been so different from so many years ago. It is good that you have had all of the opportunities that you have had and that the world has never sent the message to you that you cannot do something because.....
I HIGHLY disagree that people deserve to fail because they listened to the messages that the world is giving them. Nobody deserves to fail at anything.
Ah yes so much was just handed to me. Let's see I got a full scholarship to a school for academics because I was just handed A's in highschool. I was also just handed my degree because I put no work into it at all. You don't think people didn't tell me it was to hard and I couldn't do it. Unlike most people I gave them the big ol "screw you", and did it anyway just to prove a point.
I am where I am today because I worked hard and continue to work hard. I don't expect things to be handed to me and do what I need to to succeed. No matter what people tell me.
If you are going to listen to every ass that says you can't do it, then yes you deserve to fail. Giving up when it gets hard is called failure.
