vic0us... re: Salt Lake City

DH has a conference in Salt Lake City in early April and we've kicked around the idea of adding a leisure weekend to his trip (possibly for skiing if it's still possible in April.)  I saw that you're going there for a work conference and was just wondering if you could tell me your thoughts and impressions of the city.  Thanks!

Re: vic0us... re: Salt Lake City

  • Sorry to butt in here.. I was in SLC for the Olympics in 2002. I'm kinda of a history nerd so despite not being a mormon I hit some of the historical parts of the city (particularly around the temple) and found them really intersting. Again, I'm a super nerd. I also went to Park City for hockey and found it to be really pretty ;) Again, I was there for the Olympics so it was a whole other deal but the city is really pretty and the people are really nice. Good luck getting chocolate or booze though.. .:) At least when I was there it was tough to come by.

  • No problem! Although I will be in and out (fly in tomorrow and work all day then take the 8am flight back to Indy on Friday), will let you know how it turns out. We are planning on going to dinner at Park City or Sundance, so if that happens will let you know as well. :)??
  • Thanks both of you... and don't worry... I'm totally a history nerd, too.  I'd totally be into all the mormon (and non mormon) history there.

  • We were in SLC & Park City in October 2005. ?We stayed in Park City but went to SLC a couple times. ?Here's my opinion.....Park City is pretty ghosttown-ish after the Olympics. ?There are lots of unique restaurants and shops downtown that are nice to walk around. ?But Park City really shuts down at like 8, no nightlife whatsoever. ? We took a hot air balloon ride, which was awesome up in the mountains. ?The Olympic museum is nice, and you may see some skiers training there. ?Its about a 30 min drive to SLC. ?There are NO decent malls...well the one decent one is open air, and in Chilly conditions, that's not my idea of a nice day! :) ? The island out in the Great Salt Lake is a joke....maybe see a couple buffalo, but i generally wasn't impressed. ?We saw a few rock formations - I don't remember the park name - but the major state/national parks are 4-7 hours away, and we were hoping to see those, but decided not to make the drive. ?Overall, a few days is good....not worth a big vacation. ?It's really all about the mountains/deserts, not a lot of other stuff. ?
  • That's exactly what we're looking at- a few days in SLC proper, then maybe a day or two to ski.  Dh goes to SLC for a conference Tuesday-Friday morning, I'll prolly join him on Thursday morning, do SLC by myself for Thursday and Friday.  Then, Saturday we hope to head about an hour out of town to either Snowbird or Alta to do some skiing for a few nights and then head back on Monday.  This is still up in the air 'cause we're not sure if there will still be snow there during the first or second week in April... but those two locations are further up in the mountain and supposedly have the latest snow fall.
  • It was a short and sweet trip to SLC, I just got back actually! Since I was only there for a day and most of it spent at the trade show in Salt Palace, the only thing I can recommend is definitely go to Park City. We had drinks at Wasatch Brew Pub and an amazing Italian dinner at Grappa. As a bonus, I even got to see Robert Redford!!!! He was doing an interview w/ CNN over satelite feed. I was starstruck! Main street was hoppin' on a Thursday night but not sure if it was cuz of Sundance. ?I thought Park City was pretty cool. I wish we could've stayed another day! Hopefully, there will still be some decent skiing in April (I heard they make snow to keep some of the runs going).?HTH! :)

  • Kelly, you'll love all the fun history stuff.. that I can say for sure. The other ladies are right as far as activities, etc. you guys will have a great time. I just love mountians so the views were pretty cool for me. I think there is a website I used (I'll have to dig deep) that had the history spots mapped out and says if you can or cannot has a non-mormon go to certian places which was really helpful for my mom and I. The Brigham Young house if I remember correctly has hands down the best lime jello EVER and its a warm place to eat close to all the history stuff in downtown.. I'll shoot you an email when I find the web addy.
