Laptops

Hello Ladies,

I'm going laptop shopping after work today. I desperatly need a new one. We are currently surving off of a 5 year old dell laptop (Julie's that she won't part w/), and mine that has a cracked screen. Yes, we are a little die hard.

Anyways, please send out some recommendations. I'd like to stay under $1000.

Re: Laptops

  • We've been really happy with K's Dell.  I know many people don't like them due to the customer service, but we've never had a problem.  We looked up their US phone number and now call that directly if there is an issue.

If you decide to go for Dell, AAA members get 6% off and teachers get 6 or 10% (I can't recall).

  • i've also always loved my dell computers (we have a lap top and a desk top)....and contrary to popular belief, i've had fantastic service w/ them (as in, my dog wrecked the lap top due to me stupidly leaving it on the ground and Dell fixed it, in 5 days, no questions asked)
  • I have a pc laptop from school and I hate it so I would not go that way.  I am a mac gal all the way.  I loved my power book until a student dumped it on the floor last year and killed it.  Teachers and possibly students get a 20% discount.

  • c has a dell xps that she likes, although she had some huge issues at the beginning--including them running her credit twice in two days and having to send the first one back because it had some serious hardware issues; it wouldn't keep a charge, and it stopped booting up like two days after she got it and tech support couldn't fix it. if it hadn't been through a huge work discount she would have canceled the order, but the replacement is fine. i think they're normally a close to $1500, but dell has sales all the time so you can probably get it for cheaper and it's got some pretty cool features. i'm know they have other models, as well, and i'm not sure what the price range is on them.

i'm a mac girl myself, so i have a macbook in addition to my imac. you can get a macbook for $1000 if you get the white one instead of the new aluminum, but they only come in a 13" screen (the xps comes with 13 and 15" i believe). honestly, i like my macbook better overall but i like her larger screen. if i could have afforded to get the macbook pro, which has the larger screen, i would have. apple also has a student discount if you purchase through them, but it's not huge. i love it, though, and have never had a problem with it in terms of hardware or software.

  • Well, we have a Gateway M-Series and and Apple Notebook.

Gateway- Great and ony paid around $550

Apple- OK..Very pretty but paid around $1400

We also have a Dell Desktop which we love.

I was in Best Buy the other day and they were having a good sale on notebooks. Hope you get a deal.

  • I have a gateway FX laptop - its a gaming series.... I paid 750 for it.... I believe it was origionally up over 1500 - it was their floor model and my motherboard burned itself up one night and I was desperate...

I have to say I got it home and I play The Sims 2 and World Of War Craft and I was pleasantly surprises. No issues yet and I have had it about 4 months.... so in my terms another 2 and its paid for itself (we leave extra m,oney in the Emergency Fund as niether of us can be without our comps... I get my business through it and E has to have it for school)

He has a macbook which has served him well since novemeber of 2006.... I have gone through 2 laptops in that period of time. If they were decent at gaming I would just replace this laptop with oone of those.

Hit up stores and ask if they are selling any of their floor models..... they are usually dirt cheap. Mine had one tiny scratch on the cover....it came with a new battery, perfect screen and the specs are:

    intel centrino due mobile processor

    200gd hd

    4gb ram

    web cam

ati mobility radeon hd 2600 graphics card with dedicated 512 ram

    Windows vists 62 bit

    and a 15 inch screen.

I was expecting to get a POS on such short notice, start looking now you may truly surprise yourself. :)
