Intro Finally... and PCOS? (Sorry it's long)

Hi,

So I've been lurking around and kinda just threw myself in to the posts. I figured now is a good time to intorduce myself though. My name is Jessica, I go by Jess, I am 20 and a part time nanny full time home maker/house manager - for myself and hire. I absolutley love cooking and cleaning and familys... and my fiancee likes bringing home the money and supporting us in that way.

Currently we are in the middle of a move (10 days and counting) to a new apartment. We are planning to stay their for 5.5 years and then move to illinois.... Rockford to be specific, outside Chicago.

Ethan identifies as FtM (female-to-male transsexual) which is why I chose this board - legally until he transitions (before our move to IL) we are seen as a female couple. Therefore I felt this board would better suit us in terms of what we face daily.

Anyway, Ethan graduates college in December and I go into the police academy next summer (2010) so we are kind of getting out of the "college kid" stage and truly looking at our lives as adults. We started a savings account and are getting annual checkups as well as instilling better eating habits/choices, and overall better routines. The goal is to get use to working out daily, not eating junk food (or making it a rareity) and maintaining a proper and kept home even when I am not here 24/7 to maintain it.

The issue is... we think Ethan may have PCOS. He has an appointment with his general practitioner next Thursday. As far as I can tell he exhibits all the signs which is a main reason for the better eating habits. Do any of you have PCOS and would be willing to tell me it's not the end of the world and that it's treatable? I'm very worried. I have read so much and it all varies so much it's frightening, from changing your eating habits and working out habits and taking some meds to cancer to diabetes. :(

The infertility thing isn't the end of the world. We were origionally going to have them freeze some of his eggs so I could carry a child with his genetics but we were on the fence about that anyway (cost, procedure, etc) otherwise he has no desire to birth children, he wants me pregnant which I am beyond happy with. :)

I guess I am just looking for a bit of support - I feel we may be in a very different situation then other folks with PCOS due to the fact he doesn't mind the infertility and will be going through a hysto. in about 4 years anyway.

Thanks for any advice or kind words, in advance. :)

I have PCOS. It's not the end of the world, and is treatable. It's a huge issue for people trying to get pregnant (like me, once we start trying), and there are things you have to be on the lookout for health-wise, but most of the non-fertility-related problems (and even some of the fertility-related ones) can be addressed via basic medicine and self-care.

  • I have PCOS. It's not the most fun, but it's treatable via medication, diet and exercise. Also, TCM seems to help a lot while TTC. There are non-fertility related risks but, again, all treatable as long as you take good care of yourself.

A few basics; lower carb and slow carb foods are important."White" carbs are a no-no. I can't give up dairy so I don't so this but, eliminating dairy entirely or switching to FULL-fat dairy helps. Metformin is a popular medication to help treat insulin resitance. Exercise is important too.

There are a ton of websites with all kinds of information, support groups etc. Just Google for to see which one you like best.

    I hope that helps :-)

  • I have PCOS. There are websites with helpful info, like www.pcoscommunity.com. Other than TTC, it's really not a big deal.
