IHO of Jen's plea to move the board along
What say you about the mayor's current troubles?
I think a 40-something-year old person in a position of power sleeping with an 18 year old underling and then lying about it displays a staggering lack of judgment; I think he should resign.
In case you're wondering where everyone went:

Re: IHO of Jen's plea to move the board along
Oh, I could care less about who he is sleeping with (although I would argue that he used incredibly poor judgement in getting involved with a teenager as well as the lying, hiring unqualified personnel to shut them up and asking his comrades to verbally bully the people who were trying to bring the story to the forefront), nor do I think it's my business. I don't particularly think the question should have been asked in the first place. However, Beau was 17 when their relationship began and what he was doing was technically against the law. One of the things that most bothers me about this story is that he was the first openly gay mayor elected to a major US city and while I see PDX as a pretty open-minded place, I know there are still many, many homophobic people out there that this story just plays right into their prejudices. That makes me sad.
Mrspdxbride06,
I completley agree with everything you've said. I'm just so tired of all of the political scandals.
Well, my boss is very close friends with Bob Barr, who originally tried to publicize this story when Sam was running for mayor. Sam completely vilified him in the press and ruined his reputation, all to cover his own ass. So I for one am very glad that this story is finally out, and that people can see Sam for who he really is. I also think that by him hiring that Mercury reporter to work for him, so she wouldn't break the story, was way illegal and just wrong.
I think statuatory rape should be punished, and I don't think that any 40 year old person should be "dating" someone under 20 years old.
I think he should resign.
I agree that Adams' original handling of the accusation was deplorable. I don't think Barr gets a free pass here, though--I can't help but suspect that he wouldn't have blown the whistle had the mayor position not been on the line.
The Mercury reporter thing is just bizarre--both that it was offered to her and that she accepted.

I don't care about any politician's love life. That is private. The guy was young and possibly under age, ok I get that there could be something illegal there. But he was old enough to make his own decisions, nobody forced him.
I do agree that Sam Adams' actions afterwards were despicable. To deny the allegations and destroy someone else's career and to hire someone in your staff so they wouldn't write about it (Indeed why did she accept that job?).

Uh, ya, Bob Barr, not exactly an outstanding guy himself so I'm not feeling too sorry for him either. What I am annoyed about with this story is how soap opera-like it is. Reading the article in the WW (granted, it's the WW) was so dramatic and a bit ridiculous.
I'm going to refrain from commentary on this topic but I want to clarify two points.
1. "However, Beau was 17 when their relationship began and what he was doing was technically against the law."
This is an allegation that is unproven. It is true the AG is investigating but that is not a confirmation in itself and to say otherwise is irresponsible.
2. The original accusation was made by Bob BaLL, not Bob Barr.
The one thing I will comment on is the complete lack of privacy that the public seems to allow public officials. One's legal sex life, should not be fodder for the media (Edwards' affair, for example) unless it specifically affects their job or, if a candidate or official is campaigning based on an issue and is found to be hypocritical (condemning homosexuality while having a "wide stance"). The kind of car a political official, their property taxes or other things similar should remain off limits. These things have no bearing on one's ability to do their job. If you want to put in place morality clauses or restrictions on what sort of car public officials drive, then put it on the ballot and make it official. I'm guessing most of the public wouldn't be so excited if their jobs were contingent on morality clauses (just think of some of the pictures/ posts on the Nest!) or if their property taxes were compared to other potential job candidates.
Legal issues are legitimate reasons for investigation, etc but there need to be boundaries for things that everyone else on the planet consider private matters.
