Need advice from those living in Little Rock area

Hi everyone!  I'm wanting to find out more about Little Rock.  My husband may be getting transferred there soon so we would love to know what you think of the area, where you recommend we live (20 miles or less from Little Rock), what's great to do there, where we should go, etc.  Any advice or suggestions you have would be appreciated.

Re: Need advice from those living in Little Rock area

  • Hi! I moved to the Little Rock area a year and a half ago when my H got transferred. We live in Conway, about 30-ish miles northwest of LR. It's a nice place to live that feels small town and we love it here. Check it out as a possibility, lots of people around here commute to LR daily.

Not sure where you are moving from but we moved here from Houston so LR was a huge adjustment for us. It's much smaller and has a very different vibe. However, there is plenty to do! LR is nestled next to the AR River and downtown there is a lot to do along the river. The shopping is decent and the people nice.

LR also has a lot of historical significance being home to the LR Nine, the nine black students who first integrated white schools in the South. I haven't taken a tour of the school yet but it's on my to do list. I also want to tour the BIll Clinton Library and I hear the zoo is quite nice. AR is very much an outdoorsy state with tons to do. We love exploring the mountains rivers and lakes. It's very pretty here, which surprised us!

I'm still fairly new to the state and I'm not that knowledgeable about LR, sorry! But I know there are LR nesties, it just may take a while to get a response. Here are some websites that may help and let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to help!

  • Thanks so much Amanda for all the information!  That does make me feel better.  We just moved to Greenville, South Carolina in June after living the rest of our lives in farm country of Illinois.  So...I'm sure LR will be a combination of the midwest, yet some city life.

I never really thought about what it would like!  I guess I'll need to study up on my geography--though I didn't know SC really had mountains either and I've grown to love them!

I'll check out some of those websites too.  I think H will work in North Little Rock and we really don't want to have to commute over 15 miles if that's possible.  Do you know anything about Jacksonville??

    Thanks again--Have a good weekend!

  • I live in Hot Springs, about 45 minutes from LR.. Ive never lived in Little Rock although I know, like other cities, there is some crime there. Im a small town person, so to me, it seems like a lot. However im sure its nothing compared to some places. My grandmother lived in Jacksonville forever, in a real nice area, I think Jacksonville is a good choice. :)
  • I grew up in Conway and would live there if I moved back to AR. My dad commuted daily to and from LR. The schools in Conway are really good and they've really come a LONG way with restaurants, which some have secured liquor licenses for (when I was growing up it was 100 percent dry county).

The only complaint I have is the amount of traffic these days. The town just wasn't built to have this many people there.
