moving to San Antonio

My husband and I are thinking of moving to San Antonio in a year or two. I wanted to start doing some homework online but I have no idea where to begin. What are some popular neighborhoods for young families with good schools? I am sure that there are tons but I need someplace to start!

Thanks so much for any help yall can give us.

Re: moving to San Antonio

  • I'd say it depends on where you get jobs.  I wouldn't want a long commute.

  • I agree with kate. San Antonio is very spread out, and its hard to explain it so that people who have never been here understand. There are areas of San Antonio that in other metro-areas (like Dallas) would be their own city (like Dallas has Plano, Richardson, etc) but its still San Antonio.

We live in the Castle Hills area and I LOVE my part of town. Its 15 minutes for me to get to my job downtown, we're just a few minutes from all the major higwways - its great. But there are a lot of people who love the far North Central area called Stone Oak. Personally, you couldn't pay me enough money to live up there and deal with the traffic had live in neighborhoods without much character. But, like I said - there are people that love it and think I'm crazy for living in a 40+ year old home.

So, a lot of it will depend on where you work, how long of a commute you can tolerate, what type of neighborhood/area you're looking for (new, old, big lots, small lots, price range, etc)?

  • I completely agree with the other two. We actually live in Schertz, which is just NE of San Antonio (but still almost considered San Antonio). It's a smaller community and we really like it, but it can be very inconvenient if you work on the NW side. There's nice neighborhoods and schools all over SA, so it just depends on how long you are willing to commute. But, since you live in Houston, you're probably used to a long one! :)

  • I teach so I can work pretty much anywhere, which is nice. Right now I do have a pretty long commute. We live 30 miles west of downtown. I think if we moved I would want to be closer to the city.

    Thanks for the input!!

  • I would have to agree with the other girls. Seeing as you're a teacher I would say that San Antonio is going to be a GREAT place for you! We have two of the best school disctricts in the country (Northside ISD and North-East ISD) and several of the best private schools as well.

I live in the medical center (which would be Northside ISD) and we love it! I moved here about almost 16 years ago from Oklahoma and have been pretty close to the Medical Center the whole time. It's not too busy, the schools are great, and if you know which side streets to take, the traffic isn't too bad. Some of the houses are a little older (I think ours was built in the 70's) but there are also a lot of new little communities poping up as well. The Medical Center in San Antonio is one of the top ten in the world and it shows. Being a city girl, I love the cityscape that surrounds our little area of town and everyone that lives here couldn't be any nicer!

Good luck! And please stop by our board more often if you have any questions! People in San Antonio (esically the girls here!) are super nice and very helpful. I'd just be careful of the water...about 80% of the girls on this board either just gave birth of are expecting (I think Faith and I are pretty much the only ones not drinking from the fountain! lol)

I'm staying away from that fountain, too. I'm sticking with the wine fountain. :)

  • I don't 'drink' that water either. *rofl* Of course I already have a 16 year-old daughter. ;)

San Antonio is a superb place to live and raise a family. You can go almost anywhere and find wonderful people. I wouldn't, honestly, worry too much about commute. San Antonio is so spread out that almost everywhere is a commute of some sort. Good luck on getting here!
