Moms: Do I Need...

  • A bouncer? What are the advantages of using a bouncer rather than a swing?
  • A co sleeper as well as a pack 'n play? The co sleeper will be stationary and we won't be moving it into other rooms. Will we need a pack 'n play while traveling? The grandparents will each be buying their own.
  • An infant car seat? We have the Britax Marathon that fits infants from 5-65 lbs.
  • If we don't get an infant car seat, how will we get her into doctors appointments, stores, etc in the first couple of months? Just by use of a infant carrier/sling/wrap? Would it be a complete pain to get her out of her car seat (and wake her) and into the wrap?
  • If we were to get an infant car seat, we'd also get one of the Snap 'N Go strollers. If we don't get an infant car seat, would we want to lug the big jogging stroller around everywhere?
Thank You!

Re: Moms: Do I Need...

  • I'll preface this with "every baby is different", but these are my thoughts:

A bouncer? What are the advantages of using a bouncer rather than a swing?  Bouncer is nice because it is smaller than a swing and let's say you want to take a shower or perhaps cook something and need a place to set baby down for a moment...it's easy to move the bouncer into the bathroom/kitchen.
A co sleeper as well as a pack 'n play? The co sleeper will be stationary and we won't be moving it into other rooms. Will we need a pack 'n play while traveling? The grandparents will each be buying their own.

If you plan to have baby in your room with you and not in your bed, then yes a co-sleeper or bassinet would be helpful.  Honestly, we did not use our pnp very much except for a changing table on the first level of our home (was nice not to have to climb stairs to change her everytime).  DD did not like sleeping in the pnp, so we never used it as a crib.  Now she plays in there for a few minutes in the morning while I let the dog out, but that's about it.

An infant car seat? We have the Britax Marathon that fits infants from 5-65 lbs.

I liked having the infant seat for DD.  It makes them nice and portable. When your baby is finally sleeping you won't want to wake him/her to move to a sling/whatever.

If we don't get an infant car seat, how will we get her into doctors appointments, stores, etc in the first couple of months? Just by use of a infant carrier/sling/wrap? Would it be a complete pain to get her out of her car seat (and wake her) and into the wrap?

I would say it would be a pain, but that's just me.

If we were to get an infant car seat, we'd also get one of the Snap 'N Go strollers. If we don't get an infant car seat, would we want to lug the big jogging stroller around everywhere?

We have a Phil & Ted's that we haven't even used yet (looking forward to it this spring!) because it is bigger and bulky.  We are still using the snap n go for outings.  It's so small and can maneuver well in stores, very easy to set up and put away, too.  I would look at DD and then the Phil & Ted's stroller and couldn't even imagine putting her in there because she was so tiny, I felt like she would get lost in there!  Plus, there is so much nice padding in an infant seat, she seemed so much more snug in there!

Hope that helps!  It's crazy how many things there are to think about with a baby, isn't it?

    • A bouncer? What are the advantages of using a bouncer rather than a swing?   We had a swing, so I can't speak much to a bouncer, but Ben liked his swing for a while.  It was really low to the ground, and I brought it in the bathroom with me when I showered & got ready.  It was a lifesaver some days, but some days he didn't want to sit still enough to sit in it.
    • A co sleeper as well as a pack 'n play? The co sleeper will be stationary and we won't be moving it into other rooms. Will we need a pack 'n play while traveling? The grandparents will each be buying their own.  We used a PNP (our bedroom was too small for a cosleeper next to the bed) and Ben slept in it from the first night home.  It was great to bring to hotels & stuff because it was something he was familiar with, as opposed to renting a crib.
    • An infant car seat? We have the Britax Marathon that fits infants from 5-65 lbs.  We had a Chicco KeyFit 30 w/stroller & it was so easy to use/carry Ben around in, especially when he fell asleep.
    • If we don't get an infant car seat, how will we get her into doctors appointments, stores, etc in the first couple of months? Just by use of a infant carrier/sling/wrap? Would it be a complete pain to get her out of her car seat (and wake her) and into the wrap?  I think it'd be hard to get her from her carseat into a wrap/sling if she's asleep.  You could carry her, I suppose - and since it'll be summer when she's really little, it won't be too cold for her (we bundled Ben up in his infant seat until it warmed up).
    • If we were to get an infant car seat, we'd also get one of the Snap 'N Go strollers. If we don't get an infant car seat, would we want to lug the big jogging stroller around everywhere?  We love our Chicco - we still use the stroller, even though Ben's outgrown the carseat.  It's so easy to maneuver and tuck away in the trunk (I can even do it alone!).  I think lugging around a big jogging stroller will be tough, especially if one of you is out alone with the baby.

    Thank You!

I think a lot of baby stuff is trial and error. It's really hard to plan (and buy) for someone who isn't here yet - you aren't sure what they will like, what you will like, what will work, what won't...Ben was like our guinea pig.  If/when our second one comes along, we'll be pros!

    Good luck!  =)

  • Bouncer was my life saver.  We have the Fisher Price Rainforest.  The vibrations and music kept DS entertained and helped his nap.  You can shower!!!! and it is very portable.  I could bring it in the bathroom, kitchen bedroom.

When i was pregnant I said DS would never sleep in our room.  Ha - he was there till 5 months.  We kept him in a bassinet and even got a little co-sleeper that goes in the bed.  If DS was fussy I had to keep a hand on him or he had to be next to me.  It was the only way I could get more then 2 hours of sleep.  Every baby is different.  We love our pack n play.  When we moved to a bigger house we used that in our room.  Maybe that is why he didn't leave our room till 5 months.  We also use it for traveling up north.

An infant seat is safer then a convertible.  It is recommended that you keep the baby in the smallest seat possible.  It is also nice to be able to have the seat in your shopping cart when at Target, grocery store or whatever and not wake them up.  You can use a carrier, but again they could wake them.  We have the Chicco Cortina and I also liked the metro lite.  I like how the Chicco stroller is easier to steer and fold up.  I would test drive the strollers before you buy.  I don't recommend a jogger because they are more difficult to steer and get around a store in.

Since I mentioned a carrier I thought I would tell you I LOVE my moby wrap.  Love it.  They have knock offs at Target and BRU now!

  • We had both a bouncer and a swing and used them both.  I found the bouncer easier to bring from room to room, although my son didn't really seem to enjoy it much.  The swing we never moved and it stayed in our living room.

I have a co-sleeper and a pnp and love them both.  The co-sleeper is nice because it is level with your bed whereas a bassinet is not.  We have never used our pnp for traveling and instead it's just set up in our den downstairs.  I mainly have used it as a changing station and when my son was a baby I used the basssinet insert sometimes for his naps.

I would definitely get the carrier type car seat for the time before your baby is able to sit on their own.  In my opinion, it would be just too much of a pain to have to take the baby out and put them back in every time you needed to run into a store.  It's so much easier to just take the carrier.  Also, then if they are asleep you don't need to wake them up, just grab the carrier and take them in the house and let them stay asleep.  Additionally, like you said, the snap 'n go strollers are way easier to fold up and take with you in your car than a big jogging stroller.  Lastly, it's cheaper to buy a second base for a second car than another big seat, in case you find you need one in each car.

    • ?We never really used our bouncer. DD didn't like it much.
    • We just had a pack n play right next to our bed. Then she started sleeping in our bed so we didn't have a need for a co-sleeper.
    • I would definitely get an infant seat. They are rated safer for newborns even though the Marathon can hold babies as little as 5 lbs.
    • "Would it be a complete pain to get her out of her car seat (and wake her) and into the wrap?" Another good reason to get the infant seat. Obviously for doctor's appointments she would need to be awake anyway but for me it was so easy to just get the carseat into the shopping cart or stroller as needed without waking her.
    • I don't have a jogger so I'm not sure. We used our travel system a lot since the carseat snapped right in. It is a full size stroller but folds easily so it wasn't much of a pain.

  • we use both the bouncer and swing...the swing we have is the smaller portable ones that folds up and love it.  So both of ours are portable.

We have both a co-sleeper in our room and a PNP in the livingroom for changing diapers and naps duing the day.

I think the sling/wrap idea would be a pain...it will still be cool in May so keeping her warm will be an issue...plus she will probably be ticked if you wake her...our little guy always falls asleep in the car
