Any good websites or books on budgeting

As of right now we have no savings (really bad on our part) we need to get one going.  I just need some help in this area.  Everything I have been doing was taking over from dh a few years ago but have not been able to change everything untill now.

Once we get our tax checks all the c.cards will be paid off so thats now out of the way.  I just want to get our car paid down and both mortages paid down.

Any recs would be great thanks.

Re: Any good websites or books on budgeting

  • I personally like David Bach because it's common-sense advice w/o being preachy or over-the-top. Smart Couples Finish Rich is a really good one, and there's a workbook that goes with it.

Suze Orman is good, and Dave Ramsey is really inspiring. I like going to the library and just browsing thru the financial section. There are so many different types of books- budgeting, how to cut costs, how to invest, etc. I think Smart Couples Finish Rich is great for starting out- it covers everything and has a step-by-step guide that's really clear-cut and helpful.

As for websites, I LOVE Quicken Online. It's free and you can keep track of your spending, which is so helpful for me. It also reminds you what needs to be paid and when so you can get a good picture of what your week/month/year looks like, money-wise.

Posting your budget here is also really helpful- MMers are great at finding areas you can cut down on or ways to trim your budget.

PS- I have a car seat question, if you don't mind. :) Can you tell me a site where I can see the safety ratings of different seats? And how much do cheapo seats vary from the expensive ones? We're expecting another baby and because we live far from our parents, yet visit for a few weeks at a time a few times a year, we want to buy a seperate car seat just to use when we visit them (and keep it there). I'd prefer to buy a cheap one but don't want to trade safety for value. Thanks! :)

  • Thanks for the book recs.  Im going to the Library and get a few and read them.

    For the car seat

They dont release the safety ratings.  All car seats must pass the same tests.  The more money you spend really means more padding, ease of use things like that.  car-seat.org has alot of reviews of car seats I think they have atleast one for every car seat on the market.

Here is a list someone made on that site but they are the same seats I tell people to get.

The only one I did not see on the list that I also like is the first years true fit.  It is a convertible car seat and has the same limits as Britax seats.
