Anyone buy a house in the last year or so?

We are finally looking to buy soon and I had a question about home owners insurance.  Is it hard to obtain since the hurricanes a few years ago? I heard a lot about carriers not writing Fl anymore.

Anyone willing to give me approx rates based on sq footage?

thanks!

Re: Anyone buy a house in the last year or so?

  • we bought 2 years ago in March..I ended up getting insurance through Liberty Mutual, but I had to change our car insurance to them as well to get the home insurance.

My mortgage company pays it in our mortgage so it is one less payment I need to deal with, but my annual premium is $683 for a house under $200k and approx. sq ft 1283.

  • We just bought and ours is $475 for our 1,800sft home. There are alot of companies who are not writing policies (State Farm ) Our loan officer gave us a # for a  lady who got us some quotes. GL
  • Ours is $890 with Liberty Mutual for 3300 sqft. We bought our house in June of last year. We had a great agent and I'd be happy to give you his contact info - just let me know. DH wanted me to put in to be careful with which company you go with - they need to have the financial stability to be able to pay in event of a diaster, so don't just look for a low price for homeowners ins.

i bought my house last march and i am paying $1500/yr for out 1800sq ft house ($248k)..... i am thinking that is WAY too high (not to mention it is $300 over what they originally quoted me, and didnt raise it until after i signed the papers)

  • We are with St. Johns Insurance,,,, we were planning to go with State Farm but they are not writing policies nor could they come close on some of the other quotes
  • Our is $650-$700 for a 2000 sq ft, one story house that we bought for $230,000 6 months ago.  $500 deductable.

Be careful b/c a lot of policies have a 2% deductable for hurricane damages.  That can get pretty pricey.  It was only like $50 more/year to have a $500 deducatable and that will save us a TON if we ever get hurricaine damage.

Our is through whoever Geico uses to do homeowners insurance.  Can't think of the name of the company right now.

  • It's not too bad as long as you don't live on the water or too near the coast.  We're in the process of closing on our first house and the insurance added very little to our monthly payment, I think it's $70 or so.  The house is 1975 sq ft in Seminole County.
  • We are using St John's too.  We asked our mortgage broker for some recommendations and he sent me to three people, including HIS insurance agent.  Her name is Cathy Maler and her office is on Semoran Blvd (407) 281-6300.  She quoted me $549 for the year and it was pretty close.  We have a 1470 sq ft house with a pool.  We have 2% hurricane deductible and we do not have flood insurance, as we are not near the coast or in a flood zone.  She is also an Alstate insurance agent and we saved tons on money umbrella-ing the policies.  Hope this helps!
