my kitty is lost =(

Belle got out Saturday without her collar on, and then the neighbor's mean cat came on our deck and chased her away. She hasn't come back yet. I went to the humane society yesterday and put a lost pet ad on craig's list, what else can I do to help find her??? My poor kitty!!!

Re: my kitty is lost =(

  • Oh no! Poor kitty.

Do you have a PetCo or PetSmart? Sometimes they have lost pet boards too. Make sure you contact Animal Control, too. You don't want your kitty put to sleep if they come up with her.

My neighbors down the street lost their cat, Ira, a year or so ago. They put little flyers in everyone's mailbox and have (still do, actually) a large sign on their portch. I know I looked around for Ira for weeks after I got the flyer. You might want to do that if she's gone for a couple of days.

  • Oh noes! I hope you find the kitty!

Copernicus escaped on Friday, and he got seriously scolded for that. I am completely paranoid about that.

  • That's terrible!!  Have you tried putting out some tuna or something?  That can lure them back.  Something really smelly.

I hope she comes back soon!  I'd be just sick about it!

  • Oh no!!! I hope she's OK and comes back soon!
  • I would also contact vets in the area. Ask them to be on the lookout for someone bringing her in and see if you could put a sign. Many vet offices have pet info boards in their waiting areas.

Also you could put up signs around the neighborhood.

Good luck. I hope she comes home soon.

  • Oh no, poor Belle. I hope you find her!
  • Oh no, I'm sorry!! Fliers are a good idea. Also, supposedly mackerel is irresistible to cats, so you might even try putting some of that out.?

  • Hopefully she is just off an adventure and will be back soon.  Good Luck!

The Vet is a good idea as well, btw.  I know I always read the vet wall when I am there.

  • Good idea with the vet, I will see if I can post something there and definitely let them know that she's missing. I think the Fred Meyer's down the street has a community board, maybe I can put something up there also. I'm going to go back to the humane society today too. I'm so upset about this, I was crying all day yesterday. It's not that Belle hasn't been outside before, but without her collar and after being chased I'm so worried she won't find her way home.
  • I'm so sorry to hear this. Here's my advice for getting her back:

    1) Put out super stinky food on the porch 2x/day.  Canned tuna, smashed day old sardines, anything and everything. The more disgusting, the better.

    2) You have to VISIT every local humane society daily. Most won't tell you if they have a cat that fits her description as they are overworked/underpaid/just don't care. If she is picked up, the best chance of her being rescued is you finding her yourself- if she isn't microchipped she could be euthed after the stray hold is up (48 hrs. to 5 days).

    3) Make fliers with her pictures on them- face shot, body shot, etc.  Preferably color photos. State that she is on medication and that you are offering a reward, no questions asked.  Describe her in detail but make it photo heavy, not text heavy.  Something like "LOST CAT!  Last seen ______.  Grey tabby with white feet, green eyes.  NEEDS MEDICATION.  REWARD OFFERED, no questions asked. Post the fliers on your street, on neighboring streets, at nearby businesses, everywhere.

    4) Visit all of your neighbors on your street and neighboring streets. Go door to door. Show them her picture, the flier, and thank them profusely for keeping an eye out. Ask if they'd be willing to put food out for her as well.

    5) Ask the humane society about renting a live trap.  Yes, you could catch random animals like other cats or racoons or even possums, but you could also trap your kitty.  If she is scared, she might not come to you after being outside when approached; our female cat escaped once after living indoors for her entire life up until then, and when we found her (on the neighbor's porch) she was pacing, puffed up, and growling at us and ran when we approached her.  She was terrified.

    6) Call local vet offices every 1-2 days and ask if they have seen her. Go in person and bring them fliers, but reinforce with near constant phone calls.

If you post on Pets, you might get more advice. Good luck, and I hope she comes back soon!

  • I've also heard that you should spread out some of her used litter in your yard so she can find her way back. I hope you find her soon!

  • I'm so sorry to hear that.  Do you have any updates?  I hope she comes home soon!
  • I found some suggestions for displaced outdoor-access cats. When their territory is invaded (like the mean neighbor cat did to Belle) they might hide just a few houses away for days in a dark place, so we're going to go look under the neighbor's porches and stuff this afternoon.
  • Jessa, please keep us updated!  I keep checking back here, hoping you've found her!

  • Good thoughts! Good thoughts! Good thoughts!
  • Oh I am so so sorry to see this post :(

You've been given so much great advice...hopefully she will turn up soon. I'd be a friggin' wreck if my little girl got out.

Hugs and good thoughts to you!

    BELLE! HURRY HOME!!!

I was going to suggest this!  My cat growing up (also a grey tabby) was missing for a month, and we eventually found him under our own deck.

Hope you find her soon. :(

  • These last couple of posts reminded we have temporarily lost cats for days and weeks that have gotten trapped in sheds or garages that were open but then got closed without anyone realizing they were in there. So ask the neighbors to check those out for you.  Many years ago I had a cat get lost in the attic when we had it open. It was days before we found him. They are sneaky!!!
