Would you recommend Folly Beach or Isle of Palms? It will be my parents, my sister who's 22 and her boyfriend, as well as Dh and I , we're 28. We were planning on spending the day on the beach and most evenings visiting Charleston. We like being able to shop, eat, and grab drinks. Which beach would be nicer? If we wanted to stay at the beach for dinner and activities in the evening would one offer more? Thank you!

Re: *kbegr13*

  • Well here goes... haha, I used to work at Wild Dunes which is on Isle of Palms... it basically leads up to when you plan on coming here. Summer is the peak/popular season. As of right now up until probably May a lot of things around here have their "winter hours" on the beaches and won't have entertainment, etc.

Isle of Palms has a short strip of casual/bar restaurants (Coconut Joes, Windjammer, and a few others; those two are the most popular & sits directly on the beach; I always went there to get food when laying out on the beach b/c you can walk right up to them). Isle of Palms also has some nice restaurants close (The Boathouse (one of my fav. places; sits on the water) and Morgan Creek Grill (which is by the marina & on the water)). There is an island that sits right beside Isle of Palms which is called Sullivan's Island and they have some good places to eat as well (but its not a town by any means, just an island with a gas station and some restaurants). Poe's Tavern is a great casual place to eat "best burgers in the Charleston area!" It has a small outdoor porch and a bar inside.

Also, you have to go through Mount Pleasant to get to Isle of Palms, which has plenty of grocery stores, some nice restaurants (Mustard Seed, The Old Village Post House, etc) as well as an outdoor shopping mall (Mt. Pleasant Towne Centre), and any other options a vacationer would need. There is nothing like that around Folly Beach/James Island.

There is a great deal of activities on Isle of Palms because its somewhat closer to resources....they have kayaking, parasailing, jet skiing, fishing charters, etc... and I know it will be a little harder to find those things on Folly if you are looking to do those types of activities. Wild Dunes has their two golf courses within their resort as well... and there is another golf course nearby called Dunes West.

As for Folly, there aren't any nice sit down restaurants... they are all bar style and they are about a block from the beach on the main road of Folly. Folly isn't very commercialized.... they have a few things.. one gas station, maybe 8 surf shops and 8 places to eat which are all very random besides Taco Boy. Folly has some nice rental houses, but there are definitely better rentals on IOP; and Folly only has one hotel (Holiday Inn & is very worn out; do not advise staying there).

Soo.... haha, I apologize if this is extremely long, I'm just trying to give you an idea of what it's all like.... because when I moved here I remember being so confused/lost.

Long story short, Folly Beach is a little more local and not so commercialized and popular vs. Isle of Palms. I go to Folly beach to walk my dog and lay out because its closer to where I live. I don't think I would enjoy staying at Folly for a vacation, but it all depends on the preference of the person(s). Evenings would be better at Isle of Palms & for shopping, etc because it's closer to more options.

I can go on FOREVER, so just write if you want reccomendations on downtown Charleston or have any other questions about IOP or Folly!! I hope this helped, haha!Paradise

  • Quick bit of info... I just posted a huge amoutn of information on downtown Charleston to the most recent posting by someone coming here for vacation as well. Check it out to get info on activities, bars, and rest!

    Smile

  • Thank you so much! That really helps, I really appreciate it!
