This should be an interesting topic!
1. Do you think that you would have your current job (or your last job if you are a SAHM) if you had to pass a "background check" that included your sexual history? Or if you had a morality clause in your job description forbidding you from certain behaviors?
2. Also, do you think that people "in the public eye" should be entitled to their privacy, or is their private life open to the public?
My answers: Yes I think I would have my job still. I was a "fun girl" before I met DH, but I never did anything too risque, and nothing was caught on videotape!
My girlfriend Julie works for a Mormon company, and she is terrified to even curse at work, and she won't even write about getting a cocktail in her work email, cause she's scared she will lose her job if they find out she drinks! She's one of only 3 non-Mormon emplyees, out of about 20 in her office. I couldn't work in an environment like that... I cuss sometimes, tell a dirty joke, like after work drinks, etc...
I do think that elected officials and celebrities should have private lives. I think that their private lives should only be public fodder if they are doing something illegal. But if they are generally good upstanding citizens, they should be left alone. I would HATE to be famous, and have my life scrutinized every day on magazine covers, on the news, whatever. I want no part of that!
Re: IHO Newbie's post : your past !
With public officials it's more than just a "background check", it's public. It ends up on the front page of the newspaper (in Edwards' case, internationally, tv, radio, etc). Imagine if your husband had an affair. You have all sorts of things going on in your head and your heart and the entire world knows about it. No matter how you feel about the situation (stay or go), you can't walk into a room without knowing the entire world is talking about you.
So, to make it fair, not only is there a background check that includes your sexual history, how much you spend each month, how much debt you have, how big your house is, etc but everyone at the company will be privy to your information. Even if you're hired, you know that Joe in tech or Jane in accounting know that when you were 15 ran up your mom's credit card buying New Kids On the Block paraphenelia and when you were 28 made a sexy video with your boyfriend (and they have a copy).
