Job Search

I will be getting out of the Marine Corps in July and I have casually started looking for jobs and have gone to a couple of successful interviews.  However, I am beginning to worry about finding a decent job with the current economic climate.  How did all of you find your current job?  What industry do you work in?  What recommendations do you have for someone transitioning from the military to civilian workforce (and possibly transitioning from one field to another)?

I will be posting something similar regarding my job search on the 9 to 5 board, but I figured you may have some suggestions or advice that may be beneficial, especially since I will be staying in San Diego County.  I'd really appreciate any assistance and let me know if you would like more information regarding my work experience, resume, etc.  I can use all the help I can get!  Thanks in advance.

Re: Job Search

  • I found my current job in Human Resources through a professional organization I belong to (SDIPMA-HR).

Is there a certain profession you're interested in getting into?

  • What do you do in the MC?  I work at SPAWAR right now (as a contractor) and it seems that there are *always* openings for new people.  If you PM with your info I could keep an eye out for you (although I don't know if you want to drive this far down everyday for work).
  • My occupations in the Marine Corps are Ground Radio Intermediate Repairer and Microminiature Soldering Technician.  I have a good understanding of electronic theory and have learned to troubleshoot with schematics and various test equipment.  I wouldn't mind staying in this field, as I enjoy problem solving and I find it interesting.

On the other hand, I've always had an inclination to pursue a career in finance or in a more business-related field since I enjoy human interaction.  I'm working on obtaining my bachelor's degree in business administration and eventually earn my MBA.  At this point, though, I'm just looking for a position that can provide opportunities for professional and educational growth and advancement.

I've actually interacted with SPAWAR employees in the past for various maintenance issues and I'm definitely open to opportunities there.  I'm willing to commute a bit extra if the job is worth it.  I'm going to attempt to PM my info to you, although I've never tried it so hopefully it will work.  Thanks for offering to help me out!

  • I don't have any suggestions for you (I sorta fell into the job I have now, and thank my lucky stars every day), but I did want to wish you luck, and also think it's great you're starting to plan now. When my DH transitioned out of the military (AF) they sorta just kicked him to the curb and he dind't know where to go or what to do. He went from being in charge of a fighter jet to working security at a retail store...it was really really hard on him. So I think it's great to get your ducks in a line now and get something lined up for July! Good luck!

  • SDgirl22- I have seen so many military members in the same position as your husband.  A lot of men I know assumed they would be able to find a job while they were on terminal leave, but it rarely worked out that way.  I'm a planner by nature so I want to be as prepared as possible before making this change, especially with the way this economy is going.  Thanks for the well wishes and I hope your husband finds success in the civilian sector as well!
