Granite countertops?

Anyone have them and where did you get them or do you know places that offer good deals?  We have a fairly small kitchen and want to do granite countertops....We live in a small bungalow and want to fix up the kitchen and god knows it's turning into a crazy expense...we have an 18in dishwasher b/c the kitchen is small and on GE and Bosch make them and they are $700-$1200!!!   But of course you have to upgrade to the good stuff b/c it's what people want when you sell.....

 Any recs for countrops places?

Re: Granite countertops?

  • You should like into Silestone countertops.  My mom had them done for her kitchen and they are beautiful!  They're also heat resistant and you can cut right on them.  I know she got them for a great deal at Home Depot but I don't know the exact price.

  • We went with Quartz (DuPont Zodiaq) instead of granite because we didn't want to have to treat the granite every year.  Also because granite is pourous and I'm accident prone.  We drink alot of cranberry juice and I didn't want red stains soaked into it.

    LOVE the quartz countertop!!!!

You should wait until Lowes or Home Depot has a deal where they throw in a free undermounted sink.  They have them all the time.  Also, I have a friend who lives in Central Jersey who ordered his through Costco and got a great deal.

  • Oh.. and DuPont Zodiaq is the same as Silestone.. just different name brands for quartz.
  • What are those?  I'll have to check them out at Home Depot
  • Thanks for the info...I didn't even know the granite had to be treated and all, I'll look into the other stuff!
  • Corian looks really nice too. That was an option in our house (we couldn't afford to upgrade our countertops though). But my neighbors have it and I really like it.
  • Another option...

We have/had Corian in both of our homes and LOVE it. ?Some people say it scratches or stains, but we have NEVER had a problem with it. ?They are so easy to clean.

I love the fact that you can have a seamless sink built into Corian.  We were afraid of scratching so we didn't go that route (rather, FI was and he decided).

  • I heard you can buff out scratches with Corian.
  • How much are they a square foot compared to granite?  The granite we liked was mid range making it around $70 a square foot so it would cost us about $2300 for our countertops

Quartz is priced comparably to granite (anywhere from $50-90/sqft)

Corian is a bit less... (around $40-60/sqft)

It's been couple of years since we priced it out but this should give you an idea.

  • Ikea is another source for great countertops. They have a large selection of many different types, Zodiaq included.

If you do decide on stone, I'd check out an actual store that specializes in that. You may be able to catch a break and buy discounted remnant peices since you won't need a huge amount.

We're really considering poured concrete counters for our next kitchen. They look great and are really eco friendly.

  • we have granite and got it at lowes when they were having a sale...i don;t know exactly how much we spent since that was a few months ago but it wasn't cheap...we also have granite that has a sealant on it...
  • My friend has concrete countertops and it looks really cool. Kind of modern. She bought the house with them already in it, so I'm not sure how much it costs.
  • I'm totally late but we have Zodiaq and love it.  PIB.  Girls on the D&R board were discussing glass countertops the other day and they looked awesome.  I'll see if I can find the thread...

Recycled glass countertops were what they were discussing.  You can probably google and then ask them who sells them.
