I'm from out of state, and my entire life I've been totally obsessed with Charleston. I don't know why, I just have always wanted to live there. Since that isn't an option right now, for my 30th birthday my mom is giving me a mother-daughter 3 day weekend!!! I can NOT wait!!! The plan right now is to come in late May and I was hoping for a little guidance in the following catergories. Although we don't have money to just throw away, I think she is willing to do things nice. If anyone can give me a little guidance for the following things.
(1) Hotels... anyone know of a hotel that would fit this kind of weekend? Comfy, maybe a little trendy or fancy or just special? Where is the best part of town to stay in??
(2) Restaurants (what are the great foody places; one night I think we would like to do a chef's tasting menu, maybe with a wine pairing).
(3) a place to sit and drink a nice glass (or three) of wine
(4) Stores, fun things to do....
I can't wait!! Thanks for any help!
Re: Coming to Charleston--Help! Can't WAIT!!
Hotels: Stay in the downtown area near Market Street, King Street, East Bay Street (Historic Downtown)... these are the areas where all the activities and shopping are located (walkign distance).
All of those are located in this area and are nice places... some of them are in historic buildings so may not be exactly what you want (depends on the person(s)).
Restaurants... there are UNLIMITED AMOUNTS of great food here.... you will have to do an investigation that will best fit what you are looking for. The ones I enjoy and have good experience.
Like I said... you just need to investigate to see what YOU want. These are just the top signature rest. in Charleston that are great food and drinks. All of these places have a web-site with their menus. Very busy on the weekends so definitely book ahead of time; I use opentable.com
Great place for wine... Social. Its a wine bar with a great setting... I go there all the time for drinks (not just wine). There is a place at Vendue Inn that has a rooftop bar that is obvisously.. on the roof, haha and it overlooks the city and the water, another great place for drinks. Cypress has a bar upstairs in their restaurant that is nice for a few drinks.
As for fun things to do there is the open-air market on market street that is a huge thing that many people go to... it has local vendors selling their stuff such as sweetgrass baskets(popular). King Street is a block away from the open air market and it has all the boutiques/shops (Lacoste, Urban Outfitters, Louis Vitton, Banana Republic, VS, & a lot of boutiques). Another popular thing down here are the carraige tours of historic downtown if that is of any interest... major one here is The Red Barn Carraige Tours... right down on market street. There are also Ghost Tours in downtown Charleston... if you chose to do those or get information try out Bulldog Tours (I dont know a great deal about these tours; I know some go in dungeons and things of that sort).
I hope this helps... I worked at Wild Dunes on Isle of Palms so this was basically my job! haha! Everything I mentioned is located near each other and walking distance. When you are down in the historic area you will see a lot of other options of bars (mad river, brick, squeeze, etc), but there are so many in the area to name so if you have any questions about anything else, just ask! I posted on other SC posts for Charleston recs, so check them out and maybe I have some of your other questions answered!
Just let me know!! Enjoy!
