Um, yeah, was in the bank when it got robbed

Yeah, you read that right and yes I'm fine.  I went to my local bank around 1:15 today to make my business deposit.  Walk in, there's a line and so I walk over to the merchant line.  Since no one was in the merchant line the teller took someone out of the regular line.  Umm, yeah, guy was robbing the bank, I'm pretty sure.  The bank I go to has bullet proof glass protecting the tellers and the guy was leaning in really close so I couldn't hear everything (I was right behind him).  I heard the teller tell him he needed his ID and the guy made no move for it and I think I heard him say "I'm robbing the bank" or something to that effect.  He was acting VERY strange ... moving all around, looking over his shoulder and at one point one of the other tellers picked up a phone (I think it was ringing) and the guy said "what's he doing? Why is he on the phone? Who's he talking to??" I was seriously in a state of panic ... trying to figure out how I was going to get out.  He wasn't making a big scene so no one really knew what was going on.  My phone rang (hubby) and so I started talking and slowly started backing up so I could make my exit.  As soon as I had a chance I made a mad dash (ok so I just walked quickly, again I didn't want to create a scene) and jumped in my car and called the police.

He got away but they took statements, etc.  It was seriously the scariest moment of my life.  I have no idea if he had a gun or not ... his sleeve was pulled down over his hand like he had something or was wanting the teller to think he did.

I'm still a little shaky but ok ... I'm just glad no one got hurt.

And my best piece of advice ... trust your instinct!  I knew something was wrong and I went with my gut!  I'm glad I did!!!

  • I just posted on FB! Glad I read the whole story over here :o) I am so glad your instinct told you something wasn't right & you got out safely. SCARY!
  • Thanks, Brandy!! It was very scary!! I'm still a bit jumpy to be honest.

  • How scary, I'm so happy you trusted your gut and got the heck out of there!
  • OMG Kim!  I want to give you a big hug!  Then down a bottle of wine with you!  XOXOXO
  • Mia, I probably could have used both tonight!!! Hubby is out of town until tomorrow.  I went to borrow a bit of milk from the neighbor tonight to make myself something to eat and she ended up feeding me dinner, otherwise I probably would have had the wine!

  • Oh no!  I am so happy you got out.  That would freak me out too.

    Lots of hugs!

  • So scary...I'm so glad you got out of there before anything worse took place.  I hope you are feeling a little more calm today.
  • I was, Mindy until I just read online that a gas station about a mile from the bank got hit last night too.  And the description (albeit not a lot of information) sounds like the guy in the bank.  The gas station there were 2 people though.

  • OMG how scary!!!  Glad you followed your instinct and you are alright.
  • omg that's horrible!! I'm so glad you are okay! Our bank has been robbed a few times too:( Most recently they robbed our Downey brance. Scary part is that the guys put all the tellers together but didn't realize that the door he was putting them up against contained even more employees. Those poor employees, our appraisers!!, were huddled against another door praying to god that the robber didn't realize they were in there. (he didn't...phew)

Scary times. In this economy, people are desperate.

  • Wow, Lisa ... I can't imagine, well, maybe I can a little bit, how those appraisers felt.  Not knowing!! That was what it felt like to me ... "what's this guy going to do?"  "He's seen me now, does he know I know what he's doing?"  "Is he going to hurt anyone?"  Fortunately at this branch the tellers are all pretty secure (behind the bullet proof glass) but there were a fair amount of people in the lobby.

And yes, pople are desperate.  It's only going to get worse I'm afraid.
