Vacation Help..

DH and I have decided to rent a cabin near Gatlinburg for our anniversary trip (we needed a break from the beach!). DH wants to rent a luxury car and drive from the Dallas area. I hate being in a car for more than 6-7 hours so our initial thought was to stop in Memphis and stay somewhere. Nashville is also a possibility but I've been there several times for work and thought a new place would be fun.

Can anyone reccomend a good area or a good hotel in Memphis? On Expedia it references Beale Street a lot, but the hotel choices arent that great.

Also, I read a few reviews saying the roads can get dicey the closer you get to the mountains. Would it be safer if we just took one of our vehicles and left out the whole luxury car part?

 TIA!

Re: Vacation Help..

  • The best hotels that I can suggest downtown are The Peabody, The Madison Hotel, and Westin downtown. There's also a decent Hilton that I've had friends stay at in East Memphis. I've never stayed in the Madison but I've heard great things about it.

As far as the roads in Gatlinburg go, I don't think it's a huge deal. I think as long as your cautious of the weather it will be okay. If you're not comfortable with the idea of driving a luxury car in bad weather than I would just take yours.

  • Seriously, the drive from Dallas to Nashville isn't very bad. I've done it a couple times. I leave at 4am, drive with the sun and arrive at destination around 2pm
  • I don't have any advice about the hotels, but I can say that I live in Knoxville, and when we have driven to Gatlinburg this winter, we haven't experienced any hazardous roads! Have fun!
  • Honestly, the roads are much worse going over Monteagle Mountain on I-24 than anywhere near Gatlingburg. You should have nothing to worry about. They keep it salted all winter.

Would you even be going that way through Chattanooga, or would you be going through Cookeville??
