Tell me what 'cha know! We're very interested in cloth diapering and will do the cloth diaper trial through Jillian's Drawers. I have a few questions:
- What do you use now (type, brand & quantity) & why does that work for you?
- Diaper cream, what do you use?
- Do you use diaper dust?
- How often do you do laundry?
- Do you find the best deals online or do you shop locally?
- Laundry detergent, what do you use?
- How difficult is it? Will grandparents be able to handle it without a manual?
- Should I start buying now or wait until the trial ends?
I lurk on the EFF board but I'd like to get some WI Mom input.
Thank You!

Re: Cloth Diapering
Diaper cream, what do you use? I just use A&D. We use cloth wipes to line the diaper when we use it though.
Do you use diaper dust? No.
How often do you do laundry? I do diaper laundry about twice a week but that's only because I do it part time. I've heard average is every 2-3 days.
Do you find the best deals online or do you shop locally? Both. I've been to Nicki's Diapers in New Glarus and they have a lot of good deals especially on seconds. Online you have to pay shipping at a lot of stores but you are also able to get good sales. I liked being able to see the diapers in person too.
Laundry detergent, what do you use? I'm currently using Simply Clean http://www.simplycleanok.com/. I may switch to Purex F&C when I run out. That is what we use on our clothes and it is supposed to be ok for diapers.
How difficult is it? Will grandparents be able to handle it without a manual? Pockets (after being stuffed) are basically just like a disposable. You could get some pockets or AIOs for trips to the grandparents.
Should I start buying now or wait until the trial ends? I never did a trial but I knew I just wanted to use pockets or AIO. If there is a good deal on something, you could buy now but you won't know what will work for your baby until you try it. Basically don't buy a whole lot of anything that you aren't sure will work.I'd love some company on a trip out to New Glarus if you want to check out Nickis. They have a CD class once a month on Saturday mornings.
Yeah! Another MSN CDing mom! I'm only 9 weeks along and I've already bought my first bunch of used CDs because I found a good deal. We're going to use pockets, although I still haven't decided what to do about the newborn stage. The ones I have already are Haute Pockets, and I like those because their size range goes down farther (6 lbs instead of 8). We'll also likely get a bunch of BG 3.0s and maybe some Blueberrys (although I know they are expensive).
I think if you get something easy like pockets or AIOs, grandparents really shouldn't have any complaint. In my case, both my mom and MIL cloth diapered with pins and plastic pants, so they both think pockets are revolutionary.
I know I'm planning on taking a trip to Nicki's Diapers in New Glarus. I've heard tons of recommendations to go there and get some expert advice and also get to see the look/feel of the diapers. She also has a CD 101 class that sounds helpful. I know you can probably get better deals elsewhere online, but I'm planning on registering for my CDs on Nicki's and buying the rest probably locally at Nicki's.
Sorry, I'm no help with most of your questions, but I'm looking forward to everyone else's answers!
I'm super busy tonight, but I've been cd'ing for 10 months now and I can help you out tomorrow!

What do you use now (type, brand & quantity) & why does that work for you? We use BG 3.0 but also have a Happy Heiny, KCK One and a Tiny Tush. I like pockets because they are easy and I wont' have to buy any more since they should last until she is PT. We probably have around 27 diapers total, mostly BG. We used Kissaluvs 0 and the occassional prefold when DD was a newborn.
My only complaint is that the elastic on our BG is getting stretched out so there is a gap and we have the occassional leak. I am hoping to get them fixed or replaced.
Diaper cream, what do you use? We dont really use it often, but I have Burts Bees, Avalon Organics, and 2 others I can't think of the names right now
Do you use diaper dust? I bought it, but stopped because I read that some of the ingredients are bad for the diapers I use. I caved and bought the Bum Genius Odor spray. I have only used a few days and so far it has helped.
How often do you do laundry? every other day
Do you find the best deals online or do you shop locally? I bought most of our diapers online, I bought a few at the Mom & Pop Place in Neenah
Laundry detergent, what do you use? Right now Allen's Naturally but honestly I dont think it gets them clean enough, so I have Crunchy Clean on the way! It smells wonderful, I have used samples in the past.
How difficult is it? Not at all
Will grandparents be able to handle it without a manual? My MIL can do it
Should I start buying now or wait until the trial ends? I didn't do a trial, although I wish I had

Can I suggest a class. Happy Bambino on the east side has a Cloth Diapers 101 class. We took that class and it was very helpful.
We use prefolds and covers. But we bought a handful of gently used Fuzzy Bunz in Large via craigslist that were a steal.
: ) going back to answer your specific questions.
Just a note on brands. Right now I have Bum Genius pockets, KCK one, Happy Heinies OS pockets, Blueberry minky OS pockets, Thirties AIO, Thirsties Fab fitteds and a couple Good mamas. I like all of them. Blueberry is THE BEST nap diaper for our VERY heavy wetter. THe more expensive diapers I have (Good Mamas and Blueberries) I bought off of diaper swappers.
We started CDing at 9 months, but for the next one I want to start with a fitted like Thirsties or Kissaluvs 0.

Ooh, did I ever get busy!
1. I have a little of everything, prefolds, thirsties, covers, fuzzi bunz, haute pockets, bg's, bg aio's, bg fitteds, blueberries and probably a few more I'm forgetting. I really like the prefolds and fuzzi's they are the bulk of our dipes.
2. we use dessitin or butt paste but always use a liner
3. no diaper dust
4. 2-3 times a week, once if we're feeling lazy
5. I bought a bunch at a local store but they went out of business, now I use www.momsmilkboutique.com, always free shipping!
6. Crunchy clean
7. VERY EASY! My parents do it all the time althogh we always give them pockets
8. that's tough to say, I'm always changing my strategy, even now after 10 months I finding that as she grows some dipes work better than others and I love having variety to accomidate this. ie.. bg's are not working quite as well at night anymore so we switched to prefolds with covers and fuzzi's don't work as well in the morning because she gets really wet in the morning so we now use the bg's. I like being able to switch it up when needed! It's hard to anticipate what's going to work for baby. I'd say if you find a good deal buy 2-3, but otherwise wait
