Help Choosing Florida City for Vacation
Hi,
We are renting a beach house for my family in April. We can't decide between Captiva Island, Ft Myers or Naples. Do you have any suggestions? We want nice beaches and access to grocery stores... not anything too desolate or too busy. Thanks!
Re: Help Choosing Florida City for Vacation
You should also try the South Florida board to get more responses, but since my DH is from Ft. Myers, I know a little about the area.
In my opinion, Captiva Island is beautiful and just far enough away so that it is not busy, but not too far away from shopping. There are restaurants and small boutique/gift shops. There are grocery stores located on Sanibel Island (the island between Captiva and the mainland). Sanibel is another option if you are open to suggestions. Both of these islands are on the pricier side but not out of hand.
Ft. Myers Beach is nice, but pretty touristy. It has many tourist shops, restaurants, and high-rise condos. The further away from the tourist stuff you go (north or south), the nicer it is.
Naples is really nice but extremely pricey. The area tends to be fashioned toward older folks rather than new families. There are really no commercial businesses on the actual beach. You would have to drive to get to stores and such.
I hope this helps a little. Good luck and have fun!
Out of the locations you named, Captiva (or the neighboring island) Sanibel would be my pick. You might also try posting on the travel board. There are usually a fair amount of posters who can answer questions about Florida.
Good luck with planning your vacation.
We love Sanibel and have spent a week there the past few years.
Its quiet and unique. No real "chains" on the island except for a dairy queen.
