Maternity Leave

Hi girls!!!  We're finally starting to seriously plan for TTC and I started to investigate about maternity leave at my company, but our Employee Manual doesn't say anything about PAID maternity leave, it just mentions the FMLA, which is all unpaid time off...  I asked our HR clerk (the company is kind of small so we don't have a big HR Dept.), and she doesn't really know about since since the company has NEVER had a maternity leave!!!  (There's about 95% male "population")...  And I'm not familiar with either maternity leave or Missouri law.  Do you girls know what's the law here in the state?  Any information will be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: Maternity Leave

  • Try looking into your short-term disability plan and/or any paid leaves.

Some companies have maternity leave built in to their short-term disability to allow for paid off during that time. Others don't. I know for one company I used to work for, if your doctor wrote your leave paperwork in such a way that it made it appear due to a "serious medical condition..." blah blah blah it could count.

I would call your benefits manager, HR manager, or the provider of your short-term disability plan. There is no federal or MO law that says employers have to pay for this time off.

What does your vacation time look like? I'd save up as much vacation, sick, etc. paid time off as you can to help cover that time if it's not already covered.

  • I'll look up my short-term disability coverange.

Now I'm thinking we should've stayed in Cali to get PG... Over there you get 4 weeks prior and 4-6 weeks pospartum paid at 66% of your regular wage.

Unfortunatelly, right now I only have 1 week vacation, and I don't think I'll have much more than that by the time we have the baby (hopefully late Spring-early Summer of 2010) :-(

Wow, that's a great deal.  The last job I had sucked for mat. leave for abotu 1/2 of the employees.  If you were salary, you got STD free from the company, if you were hourly, they didn't even give you the option to purchase STD.  If you were hourly, the only pay you'd get would be vacation time that you'd saved.  Maybe since nobody's taken mat leave, they'll review it and decide to pay you at least partially for it.  GL.

  • i would look around and find a STD policy to buy. that way if they give you time off, you can make a claim on the policy for money. i don't know what they run, but mine paid me $2600 or $2800. i think aflak is one company. you have to have the plan at least 10 months before you deliver so make sure if you want one, you look well in advance of getting pregnant or it won't pay. i have a rep's number i can post if you'd like. i talked to him about a second plan when i was preg with #2. good luck!

  • Sorry I don't have any info on maternity leave for you but I just wanted to butt in and say that I'm excited for you and your DH on the TTC!  I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you.  Wink
  • Awww... Thanks Mrs. Goose!!!  We'll start trying late in the summer, but I'll keep you updated :-)

It looks like I do have STD, but looking into Aflac or other similar to that sounds like a great idea!  Thanks you!
