CookieMonster: daycare

That $10,000/year was for preschool at a private school. It was the most expensive (but also most impressive) we saw.

As for infant care - it is going to depend on what kind of setting you choose.  Based on friends who have infants in a daycare setting, they are paying $200-$250/week. People I know who have their infants in a home based daycare center (meaning someone taking care of a few children in their home) are paying $175-$235/week. And people with nannys (not a nanny share) pay $550-$800/week depending on the number of kids. Typically nannys get $15-$18/hr - but you can look at doing a nanny share so you only pay half of that. Keep in mind these are DC rates.

Childcare is by far the most stressful part of having kids. But in the end it always works out.

  • oye. that's about what i figured. We'll be in NNJ by then, close ot NYC, so it'll be about the same. Painful!

    thanks for sharing!

  • Daycare is my current worry. I know it will work out but it still worries me.  We are prob going to go with home daycare which will be a little less expensive.  Also I can take the baby out in the summer and not pay at some of the ones that do teachers hours.  The going rate is 8.50/hr.  The good news is we only have to pay from 8:45 -3:15 so that also makes it easier to pay for.

For preschool I would like to send our children to montessori school but the ones in our community are crazy.  One is $18,000/school year and that is without extended day!  I am hoping my mum (who is a montessori teacher) will help us out with that!

  • We really wanted to put the kids in Montessori - but financially we can't. Thankfully, our nanny has her Masters in Montessori and is certified. She started doing Montessori stuff with our kids when they turned 2.5. It has been great!

  • SSG- my mom's a Montessori teacher too!  I *also* hope she'll help out in that area when the time comes :)
  • oh cool!  Love montessori although I need to get S on board.  She keeps telling me she doesn't understand what is so great about playing with wood toys?????  Should I even start that it is not play but work????  This could be interesting!

  • LOL. My kids say every morning that they are going to go work with M (our nanny.) They love it.

Wood toys are great. We have very few toys that require batteries. Smile

  • Ha! Yeah, that was Katie's first reaction, too. "Work? That is play."  I really want a pink tower in my nursery, but they are sorta expensive!
