Dog Boarding in San Diego?

Hey!  Does anyone have any great recommendations for dog boarding??  I will probably have to board my little guy in April and I need some great recommendations.  I'm pretty picky about where I leave him - has to have nice people and a good facility with different options for kennels.  I'd really like a place that has kennels with outdoor access.  Any suggestions are appreciated!!

  • I would love to know this too! When we left him for a weekend in early January, all the ones we found/checked out didn't meet our expectations. I'm very picky about where my boy stays so we just ended up leaving him with a friend, which was the best decision.  We're not sure if our friend will always be available when we go away (we watch their dog when they do) so we would love to find a really good place we can leave him without worrying the entire time.

  • There is Snugg Pet Resort where the 805 and 5 merge in Sorrento Valley.  We haven't taken our pup there but it was one of the places we checked out online when we were looking for boarding.  The boarding fee is pretty reasonable and they have an onsite vet and a bunch of other amenities.  And it is owned by LT (the Charger) and his wife.

  • Personally, I really really reallly was not a fan of Snug. Per a recommendation, DH and I took tour of it recently, and it was just...bad. I wrote a not-so-hot review of my experience on Yelp if you want to know more. Basically, it just felt like people there weren't dog people and I didn't caer for it whatsoever! What really made me uncomfortable is that the facility is void of people from 7 pm to 7 am-so all the pets are alone for 12 hours at night. Literally not one human. That freaks me out.

We board at Petsmart, and have been totally happy with it. THe price is reasonable, and they know Callie by first name when we check her in (and all of her crazy traits like trying to swim in the water bowl!) I know it's commercial, but we've been happy with it (we used to go to the one in La Jolla, but now go to Escondido as it's close to us). Our vet also has a good boarding facility that we use as a backup-Shadowridge Vet Hospital in San Marcos.

My parents use Camp Diego in Pacific Beach and they really seem to like it! (just a bit far for us)

  • Snug was one we checked out as well and would never leave him there. I don't think I could enjoy my vacation if I left him at a place like that.  We live right by the La Jolla Petsmart and have seen the hotel there, but never actually used it. We're hoping to meet people and trade off doggie care with them. So far, we have two neighbors with dogs that offered to care for him and we offered in return, so hopefully that works out since that would be the best situation for all of us.

  • WOW!! So you weren't happy with Snugg?? GOod to know! Honestly, I'm more comfortable with a place that doesn't let Dante outside at all (for fear he'd escape) but that place looked nice! Thanks for the input.

We have brought Dante to Petsmart in LaJolla too...BUT over Christmas that one was full and we had to bring him to the one in El Cajon. It was SO much better!! I'll still go to La Jolla (sometimes its just way more convenient) but I wanted to let you know I just liked the feel at Petsmart El Cajon better...but both places are good in my book :)

Dante is completely mis anyway...at least I feel safe with him at either place. And on our last trip we called and asked to talk to Dante!! LOL. They brought us to his cage. Oh, you can get suites, too, that are bigger. We've gotten him those...

  • If you go for a tour at Snug, you will see that the people who are supposed to be supervising free play sit there like they are bored out of their minds, with piles of poop and pee everywhere and all the dogs stepping in it. It's like they don't even care. I'm not saying they should be jumping up and down, but at least interact with the dog if it walks up to you and at the very least, pick up the damn poop. Some dogs will eat other dog's poop and it is unsanitary to have them stepping in it.  Never would we leave him there and we almost cancelled that trip but our neighbor came through at the last minute.

OMG-that's the SAME feeling we got! Yuck! Not a fan of Snug, which is too bad-we were excited they had a pool for our part-fish dog.

I'd offer to babysit Pork, but Callie is quite a handful as it is...she's exhausting!

Lisa-You're right-we like our local Petsmart Hotel alot, maybe because it's not as crowded as La Jolla?

  • We use Acacia Animal Hospital in Escondido for our cats.  They also do dogs and birds (one of the few places in the county that have birdy day care).  They have a few different kennel options and the staff loves animals.  Most of the people who work their hang out with the cats during their breaks (they have a rocking chair in the cat room for people to sit and cuddle with the cats).  They have a dog run for outdoor time.

The thing we like best about leaving out pets there is that they are also a vet so if there is an emergency, we know that our pets will get the care that they need.

  • I very highly recommend 2 paws up in Valley Center.  It might be a little far, but totally worth it.  It is an amazing facility.  We take our dogs there whenever we are going out of town.  It has tons of outdoor play areas and the owner even bakes all the dog treats for the dogs.  Baths are even included.
