Portland in June

DH and I are visiting Portland in June for our Anniversary (staying downtown at Hotel DeLux) I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good restaurants or fun things to do? We like all kinds of food and are up for any kind of entertainment. We really don't know much about Portland so we are excited to explore...love the outdoors but also love just walking about and relaxing too. Any suggestions would be appreciated! :)

Re: Portland in June

  • When in June? In the beginning of the month there is always a ton to do related to the Rose Festival. There are parades, musical events, dragon boat races, etc. Google Portland Rose Festival for more info.

?check out the Travel Portland website for tips on dining and activities. There is so much to do in and around Portland. How long will you be staying? You should take a day to venture out into the Columbia River Gorge and hike some of the beautiful trails there. Along the old Columbia River Highway (a very scenic drive) there are lots of waterfalls with trails). Drive through to Hood River and you could come back over Mt Hood and stop at Timberline Lodge for a late lunch or drinks. Another day trip is to head out west to some wineries. The Willamette Valley is famous for lovely Pinot Noir.

There are too many good restaurants to count but some of my favorite include Andina (Peruvian food), South Park, and Jake's seafood grill.

?I have some links in my bio to blogs about Portland (Portland Events) and Oregon (Oregon Getaways bio) that have more tips.

  • From the Hotel DeLux you are super close to the "NW 23rd" area, it's nice to get out and walk, and there's a ton of shops, with a good mix of local shops and boutique chains.  You could easily spend a morning walking around, grab a coffee and just explore that area.

The Rose Gardens are really cool, and you could go up to Pittock Mansion at the same time.  It's one of the best views of the city, and a great place to crack open a bottle of wine and relax on the lawn.  Are you getting a rental car?

  • Thanks girls! I appreciate it. We'll be staying from the 10th through the 15th, and we will have a rental car.

I'll have the check out how far away the Colombia River/Hood River and Willamette Valley are from the city, and we'll definetly have to check out NW 23rd area!

  • I second Andina.  It's my favorite in town.

Here are some other restaurants to try (my faves anyway):

Papa Haydns (great desserts and they're on NW 23rd)

Bluehour (French in the Pearl District)

    E-San (Thai in Downtown)

Sinju (Sushi in the Pearl District)

Mother's Bistro & Bar (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner in Downtown)

    Higgin's (French, American in Downtown)

    Clyde Common (American in Downtown)

Ten 01 (American - GREAT Happy Hour in the Pearl District)

    Other attractions I might suggest:

    Classical Chinese Garden

    The Japanese Garden

Art galleries in the Pearl District

    Hiking in Forest Park

  • June is a great time to do the Jet Boat Excursion on the Willamette River.

Both the short and longer rides are great, but I recommend the longer ride. It's a nice way to see downtown, all the bridges, learn some history, and it's a blast!! My FIL comes out every year from Boston and he has to ride it each time.

  • awesome, thanks again everyone!!

  • Not a fan of Bluehour for food. Good drinks but food isn't worth the price.

Clyde Common isn't all that either.

Higgins is excellent and local. Wildwood excels at lunch over dinner and is also very local. If you're feeling adventurous, try Ping but keep in mind that it is more authentic than American-ized so it's not really designed for traditional American tastes. It's owned by the same people that own Pok Pok, which is fantastic if you like Asian.
