Anyone been to Palm Springs?
We're thinking of going there for a weekend in March/April. What's there to do? Also, where else do people from SD go for weekend trips? Is Catalina worth the trip? We went to LA, mostly because we had visitors from NJ, and I'd rather never return there. If you know of any driveable places, I'd love to hear about them!
Re: Anyone been to Palm Springs?
We are going there the 1st week in March!! From what I remember (its been awhile since my last trip there) its kind of a relaxed town, lots of golf, spas, and food! There is also the tram that goes up the mountain (beautiful views & hiking.)
Catalina is worth the trip as long as you dont get sea sick on the ride there or back!
Other weekend trips... Santa Barbara, Newport Beach, good old Vegas, Mexico (im not talking TJ!), Big Bear.
Have fun!!
There's lots of golf and lots of old people!
I highly recommend the aerial tram-way. It's really really neat! Not cheap, but worth it-some great hiking trails up there, too if you're interested.
Other than that, there's restaurants, shopping, et. but not too much else...

Yes, I have been there many times! My girlfriends and I go every year for our annual girls weekend. We are going the first weekend in March too. It is very relaxed, there are a ton of good restaurants, shopping, nice spas and lots of golf courses if you are in to that. We usually lounge by the pool most of the weekend, since the weather is always so warm. And I agree with Ericka, the tram ride is gorgeous. Last time we went it was super hot down in town, but there was still snow when we went up in the tram, it is super fun!
Catalina is super fun too, just a very mellow relaxed place. There is not a ton to do there, but if you are looking for a mellow weekend it is perfect. It is about a 45 minute ferry ride over.
We looove Solvang (near santa barbara). If you've ever seen Sideways you would appreciate the wineries & restaurants there...Its such a cute town with great wineries!!!
I hope to get to Palm Springs soon!

We go to PS to golf, relax and spa. Also PS is older...the nicer PS is actually Palm Dessert and they are quite a ways away from each other. We have stayed at La Quinta..not so fab, but the golf and spa were good.
For a gew away, we do Idyllwild, Temecula, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Tucson, OC.
Been to the Palm Springs area once and probably wont go back. Its one huge retirement community with bad traffic After spending 2 days there, DH and I could not figure out why people would go there (with the expcetion of a crash pad for Coachella and the Indio Tamale Festival).
If you dont mind hopping on a plane, you can fly Virgin America up to San Francisco for the weekend.
Do you ski? If you do, you could do a quick ski weekend up to Big Bear or one of the other resorts. You could probably even take Porkchop sledding!
You could do Santa Barbara if you want a long weekend (3-4 days).
You been out to Anza Borrego yet? Its more of a day trip but you could probably make a weekend out of it. Its really pretty when all the desert flowers are in bloom.
Its too bad that you dont want to go back to LA. There is a ton of stuff there that you can make a weekend out of. LACMA gets some nice touring exhibits and there are some good events at the Greek Ampitheater. The Getty is also a good option if you like art. Im kinda partial to LA since I grew up going to LA a lot!
Neither one of us skis (go figure; we grew up around some great ski resorts). We are going to Big Bear on the 28th for the weekend, and are taking Porkchop. He was my main reason for wanting to go. I want to see how he handles the snow, since he hasn't seen any yet.
We're planning on going to Anzo Borrego in the spring, hopefully when my mom visits. Do you know what the best time to go there is? She's coming the 1st week in April and I'm hoping it's still a good time to go.
I never liked LA. We went there for a week 2 years ago and have seen pretty much every part of it, and now it seems whenever we have visitors, all they want to do is go to LA. So we'll have many more trips of that in the future.
Thanks for all the recs! Santa Barbara is definitely on our list of places to go!
