Been to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge TN?

The TN board is slower than the SC board, so I thought I'd ask over here too since many of us aren't too far from Eastern TN.

For those who have been to Pigeon Forge / Gatlinburg, what are the MUST DO's and the MUST AVOID's?

DH and I are going March 6-8. Dollywood will be closed.

Re: Been to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge TN?

  • I went to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge two March's ago and I didn't find it too attractive. It is VERY family oriented (no cursing on the streets, haha), and it reminds me of something like Myrtle beach area. TONS of putt-putt courses and go carting, and many souvenier stores. I was there with about 10 of my friends and we stayed in a cabin far up in the mountains and didn't get to go down too much, but the guys just went hiking, but I didn't see too much stuff to do while I was there for my group of friends and I. But I do give it credit... it is very beautiful when staying up in the mountains. And there is the Dolly Parton Dixie Stampede Dinner and Show as well as the Ripley's Aquarium.

  • Pigeon Forge is VERY touristy-go karts, putt putt, etc. there are a few outlets that are decent there-and Dixie Stampede-the "original" since that's the area Dolly's from. :-)

Gatlinburg is lots of fun-the downtown is very people friendly-walking nearly everywhere. there are a few chairlifts that take you to some of the best views of the area. Also, my favorite thing about Gatlinburg is Ober Gatlinburg-take the "sky car/gondola" up to the actual site and there's a skating rink, wildlife area (at least there was the last time I was up there) and a few other things. i'd stick to Gatlinburg more than PF, esp if you want to really explore the area. :-)

    Hope this helps!! :-)

Hey I got your message, I had no idea you were from the area!!!  Here are some things I saw online that I thought looked interesting/entertaining... maybe you can give me the yay/nay on them.

Shopping at The Village in Gatlinburg

Skiing or snow-tubing (though we'll be at the very end of the snow-season)

    The Comedy Barn (show)

    Magic Beyond Belief (show)

    Ripley's Aquarium

    Baskins Sq (unique shops)

Ober Gatlinburg (Ice Skating and Alpine slide)

    Mt. Valley Vineyards

    Smokey Mt. Cat House

One of the biggest things to do in gatlinburg/pigeon forge is shopping.

Ober Gatlinburg is always pretty cool even if you don't ski or snowboard. You can ride the chairlifts up and there are shops up there and ice skating (who doesn't LOVE ice skating??? lol)

To me if you've been to one ripleys aquarium, you've been to them all.

The comedy barn is pretty good, but it isn't a place you'd go to more than once

Some of the others you mentioned I haven't heard of much.

    Some other suggestions:

Even if you aren't outdoorsy- I recommend EVERYONE to go to Cades Cove. Very beautiful plus you get to see things you likely never get to see anywhere else and all within feet from you. We've been a few times (it's free!) and so far we've been within arms reach from: fawn, bucks, coyote, black bear ect. plus as you ride you can see and go in houses and churches still standing from the colonial period (did I mention it's free!?lol) They do have a cute little area where you can watch how they used to mill corn and they have wooden toys and a gift shop- so you can end up spending money but to actually go see the mill and ride through it's free.

If you've never been to Dixie Stampede it's a good place to go too.

Also, we enjoy going to the apple barn. Pretty much it's a big barn filled with everything apple. Apple sauce, apple butter, apple cider, apple juice and apple novelties you can also eat there, as there are several restaurants.

And lastly, the most fun place I've ever been to in Pigeon forge is the indoor sky diving. It's so fun. You are pretty much put into a room with a suite on and then they bloe air from the ground and it causes you to float in the air. We had a blast doing this!

    Anyways..hope that helps.

We are actually planning to go back up there sometimes in March or April. We really enjoy it up there!

Thanks!  I'll have to look into Cades Cove! DH doesn't like heights so we'll be driving to Ober Gatlinburg, but I read where it's free to drive up there and then like $4 to park, so we'll actually save money that way... Plus DH won't stroke out on me.

  • We went with some friends in early December and had a blast.  We basically describe it as Myrtle Beach in the mountains.  Pretty much all the same stuff.  Shopping is one of the best things to do.

If you are looking for a fun way to spend an evening...there is a relatively new place that just opened called Adventure Quest.  It is a little cheesy, but it is fun.  They have an indoor mini golf course, a mirror maze, and a lazer maze.  It actually isn't a bad way to spend an evening.  The mirror maze was fun, and we actually had to hunt down my husband because he got lost.

Try to eat at the "Old Mill" it is pretty good.  There are also a lot of cool shops.  If you are like me and love cats, there is a store called the Smoky Mountain cat house...it seems like a place that should be inhabited by a crazy cat lady but there is some cute stuff and we always get a good souviner for our cat.  If dogs are more your thing there is a dog house next door.

  • Hey V I was just there this past weekend with my parents, sister, BIL and the kids (DH had to work).   We were only there from late Friday-Sunday dinner time.  But I did see lots to do.  I am hopin to go back with DH one weekend once the baby comes.

    Thanks everyone for your help!

That's crazy that you were just there T, how are you feeling???  Great I hope!  Not long now till the little man arrives, just a couple months right?

I dont think we'll need a TON to do, it's our anniversary trip and meant to be romantic.  Or room is really nice with a jacuzzi and a fireplace etc, so we may even psend one day just lounging around.

I found online where there is a mall and it has a store dedicated to hot sauce.  DH will LOVE it.  He is crazy about hot sauce and whenever we are at a restaurant with a hot sauce he hasn't tried, he always gets a spoon and has to taste all the new ones.  Well this store at the mall there has a tasting bar where you can taste all sorts of hot sauce.  I'll have to remember to pack some heartburn pills for him :)

No one knows of any places in that area with dueling pianos do you?
