Good Morning!
I'm planning a weekend trip with the hubby - as a Southern Cali girl who has NEVER been to San Francisco would love to hear any recommendation on hotels, trips, whatever tips you may have!
Thanks in advance!
Re: San Fran- recs??
First things first, I don't care what time of year you are going, pack layers of clothing...it can be super cold even in August. Pack a rain poncho or something that will keep the rain off of you also.
You don't really need a car in S.F. as it is a very walkable city and you can take the cable cars for further distances. Get the all day pass, which is about $11, you can't go wrong with this option. And don't wait in line at the turnaround spots...just walk a few blocks up and hop on the cable car then...
I'm no good with hotel recs because I lived there, so never stayed in hotels. But I'd stay in the Fisherman's Wharf or Union Square areas.
Go to Fisherman's Wharf, don't bother eating inside one of the restaurants, you can do just as good at the little stands just outside of the restaurants for half the price. They sell clam chowder in the bread bowl, shrimp cocktails, whole crabs, you name it! For amazing Vietnamese food, go to the Slanted Door located at the Ferry Building. Great Italian can be found at SPQR.
I love Chinatown, go for Dim Sum if you have the time....such a wonderful dining experience. Head over to the Buena Vista for an Irish Coffee...and if you have time they have a great breakfast menu.
If you want the best view in town without all of the crazy crowds, Google Tank Hill, it will tell you how to get there. Such an amazing view of the city, the bridge and the Bay.
Go to Alcatraz, it really is cool. I'd recommend making reservations online before you go on your trip. It books up fast. And...take a walk across the Golden Gate!
The musuems in town are great, if you are into that. You really can't go wrong.
I like The Chancellor Hotel across from The Drake. They're a bit cheaper too.
I always make sure to eat at Cha Cha Cha's in the Haight area. Their tapas and sangria are all delicious.
Fishermans Wharf is super crowded and super touristy so I always avoid it except in early morning.
