anyone read any good books lately?
I'm hitting the library after work today and I need some good reads to keep me occupied while at work. (only 35 more days until I'm outta this hell hole)Any suggestions? I want some fun stuff. Please no serious drama's or depressing novels. Last book someone suggested was so sad that it put me a funk for a week;)
Re: anyone read any good books lately?
Have you read the Twilight Series? Fun, easy reads. Or what about the Shopaholic books? I also like Jennifer Weiner.
These are all fun books to read, I think.
I've been on a young adult book kick lately... Check out Sarah Dessen books, they're all stand alone books so it doesn't matter which one you pick up first. Since you're trying to avoid anything depressing, I would avoid "Dreamland." Also good are Megan McCafferty's books, it's a series that starts with "Sloppy Firsts."
I love YA lit, it's perfect when you want something that grabs your attention right away.
Our entertainment editor got a copy of "Shopaholic" at a media event for the movie and I took it from him... totally funny! not the most intelligent read in the world, but it's a fun book.
You know what I want to dig up? Some of those old V.C. Andrews books I read in high school. Now there is some high-quality crap! It's like soap operas, but better.
Oh wow 2bBush, that is scary... I *just* posted on the NBC board about how I picked up Heaven by V.C. Andrews at the library this weekend.

I know! Flowers in the Attic is probably not appropriate reading at 12, but if you are older than 16 it's all just a little silly...
Wait, is Heaven the one with the daughter raised by her hillbilly stepparents, and her teen mother had been raped by her stepfather who made the lookalike doll and ran away pregnant, met the handsome hillbilly carnie, then died in childbirth, but named her angelic daughter "Heaven" ? LOVE IT!
Hahaha, yes that's the one! It's SO over the top, especially when you summarize it just like you did, but such great reading for some reason. I remember the first time I read it was when I was 10 or something... my friend read her older sister's copy and then gave it to me to read. Seriously way too illicit for me at that age but I still loved it.
I love Jen Lancaster's books: Bitter Is The New Black, Bright Lights, Big Ass and Such a Pretty Fat. Easy, funny reads. I've also heard good things about Jennifer Weiner's books too from my book club, but haven't read any myself.
Also, the last BEST book I read was Water for Elephants. It can be a little sad at times, but I promise it's worth it. That book has made it through my whole family, even my DH read it, and now through my whole book club, and we ALL loved it.
I heart Megan McCafferty's books! I read sloppy firsts but haven't read the "seconds" book. I must get on this:) Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.
And VC Andrew books I just refuse to read!!!! Heaven Leigh...omg....was she the same girl that was adopted by the crazy lady who made her take Ballet, after she put her in boiling water and scrubbed her with a brillo pad?? Dude, those books always bothered me. Poor girl could NEVER catch a break. But oh, how I longed to live in the Bayou...it seemed so cool! Except when Pa sold her....lmao.
I'm a lurker, but an avid reader. I just finished Carrie Fisher's "Wishful Drinking" and it was beyond funny. Just my two cents
If you haven't already, I second the Twilight series ... and that's coming from someone who generally does not get sucked up in the hype over a book. I liked the first 3, the last was "eh" in my opinion. I didn't fall head over for them like some people and at times found myself saying "really?? I'm really reading this?" but I did really enjoy them and was sad when they ended. I'm now reading the Sookie Stackhouse (also vampire) series by Charlaine Harris. It is what True Blood on HBO is based on.
I also second Water for Elephants, but if you're looking for a light read this isn't it. It's VERY good and you should read it but you might cry. I have also picked up Sill Alice which is about dementia. What I read of it I really like, but it's not going to be an easy read considering there is dementia in my family.
Fun, easy reads are anything by Janet Evanovich. The Stephanie Plum series is great ... I think she's up to 14 books plus 3 add ons. Lots of fun, you'll find yourself laughing and easy to read.
I've also read the Jennifer Weiner books and loved them!
I liked The Friday Night Knitting Club and see that there's a second book out but I don't want to pay full price for a hardback so I'll wait on it. I really liked it ... not super light though either.
Good luck, let us know what you decide on!
Oh my, this made me giggle so hard.
I adore this series. Last time hubby and I were in Costco they had 3-4 of them, and I stood there in the aisle and read them all to him. Yeah, it was weird, but what can I say? Sometimes you have to be weird.
I'm reading The Good Solider by Ford Madox Ford. It's old, and opens with the famous line, "This is the saddest story I have ever heard.? It won some award, so that's why I'm reading it. The other books suggested sound more fun.
I just finished Veil or roses by laura fitzgerald. It's about a young iranian women who comes to the US. It's an easy read, and funny in some parts with her dealing with the cultual differences. Sad too when sees how much freedom women have in the US compared to Iran.
Also I started reading anderson coopers autobiography, and it is great - not finished it yet. School started today, so it might have to wait till summer!
great books I've read are: Polar bear, Polar bear what do you see & If you give a Pig a Pancake. One for each kid. Then my all time favorite: Dr. Seuss's Do you know how lucky you are? I just love seeing their faces when I read the funny words.??
