Visiting Charleston

We are visiting Charleston April 15-21.

We plan to really scout the area to see if we love it enough to move down there. Do you have some recs for what we should look at while there? (obviously moving is contingent on securing jobs). We plan to look at some neighborhoods just outside of Charleston (like West Ashley) but I'm open to any suggestions.

What are your favorite restaurants and things to do?

What can I expect the weather to be like? It's still in the 30s and 40s here in April, so anything will feel warm- but will it be warm enough to lay by the pool or go to the beach?

What should I bring to wear? Are jeans and ballet flats acceptable for the restaurants and bars?

TIA!

Re: Visiting Charleston

  • If I were you I would spend time walking around downtown and enjoying the best parts of the city.  Shopping at the market, visiting waterfront park, window shopping on King St, adoring the East Bay St mansions, picnicing at the Battery, walking the Ravenel Bridge...

I'm partial to West Ashley myself.  James Island has a steeper price and Mt. Pleasant is even crazier.  North Charleston/Summerville is very affordable, but unless you work in that area, the commute is horrible.  The price of housing is great just outside I-526 in West Ashley.  It's a growing area.  With the housing market currently though, you could find probably find something good inside the 526 for a good price.

I have a list of fave restaurants by area at the bottom of the Charleston link in my Bio (along with pics of my fave locations in the city).

The weather will vary.  It could be in the 50s or the 70s.  It may be nice enough by then to lay out in the sun, but the water will be freezing.  I barely can stand it in May.

Jeans & ballet flats would be good for most restaurants/bars.  The more expensive ones, I'd go a little dressier.

HTH.  Let me know if you have any other specific questions.

  • I live in the West Ashley area and actually enjoy it a lot. My boyfriend lives in a nice developement in West Ashley as well.

There are TONS of things to do in Charleston... it just depends on what you are looking for... if you want a lot of information I wrote about Charleston, check out the previous posts on the SC board, because I have put a great deal of things to do on other people wanting to know information about Charlesotn recs.

Im always going downtown to the rest/bars/King Street/East Bay Street/ and the open air market. It is 70 here as we speak... but last week it was in the 30's at one point. Gets chilly during the night. I hope it will be warmer by then.. or at least stay the temp. its getting up to now (70's).

High Cotton, Basil, S.N.O.B., Charleston Grill, Cypress, Magnolia's, Blossom, Jestine's, Hanks Seafood, Peninsula Grill, Cru Cafe, Fleet Landing... all great restaurants.

Johnsons, Mad River, Pavilion Bar,Social, Squeeze, Brick, Wasabi's, Pearlz, Rooftop bar @ Vendue Inn, Blind Tiger Pub, Beer Works... are popular bars located downtown.

There are some restaurants that require dress up... (not jeans) for dinner. You'll have to figure out what restaurants you are looking at and find out the dress code. Most of them are located in Opentable.com and can give you their menu and information.
