Hi all -- I have a job (postdoctoral fellowship) offer at OHSU that I will likely accept here soon, and my start date would be mid-summer. Unfortunately my DH won't be able to join me in PDX until at least early 2010, and even then maybe only part time. We own a house here in Indy, which we'll probably hang on to since it's pretty impossible to sell anything without taking a huge loss right now.
So I'll be looking for budget-friendly housing that's convenient to OHSU -- ideally on a public transport line since parking on or near the hill is a b!tch anyway. Anyone have any suggestions for certain areas of town or websites I could check out, beyong just blindly starting at apartments.com?
Thanks! I loved PDX when I was there for my interview visit and I'm looking forward to possibly moving there... just the logistics -- with a husband with his own successful career and a house (both here in Indy) -- are a little crazy.

Re: Portland/OHSU housing
Also check out apartments on the South Park Blocks. There is a bus that goes right by there and up the hill to OHSU. When I met DH he used to live in the Park Plaza apartments. The nice thing is you can walk to the farmer's market on Saturday or to the art museum or downtown.?
Goose Hollow is another area where you could find apartments. I think there is an OHSU shuttle that leaves from the Goose Hollow MAX station, but I'm not sure about the schedule.?

I agree with both the posts above mine, they have great places. When you are seaching, search SW or Downtown PDX. Craigslist ads usually say something like "close to OHSU" or something like that. There's tons of options, and I would suggest somewhere where you can take some sort of public transportation, because paying $10 to park takes a big chunk of your paycheck!?
Good luck, you can email me if you have any other questions about Portland or OHSU in general. ?

Congrats! I'm finishing up my dissertation at OHSU.
A few areas I would recommend for price, safety, and ease of trasportation to the hill:
Multnomah Village
Hillsdale
John's Landing
Sellwood
Brooklyn
Note that the tram runs every three minutes or so, so as long as you can get to south waterfront, you're golden.
So, what department are you joining? Whose lab? Don't mind me, I'm nosey. You can email me at pdxphotogrl at gmail.com if you have any specific questions and I'll do my best to answer.
